7/8/14

Mets Minor League Report: July 7, 2014

MMLR Player of the Day: Savannah RHSP John Gant.

Las Vegas (53- 39)  was routed by Reno (50-42) 14-8.

The most significant thing that occurred in this game is that Omar Quintanilla pitched a perfect inning. Nary a nick.

Giancarlo Alvarado: (L, 3-4) 2.2 IP, 12 R, 12 H, (3 HR) BB, 2 K.
Erik Goeddel: 1.1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, BB, 2 K.
Zack Thornton: 1.0 IP, 2 R, 0 ER 2 H, 0 BB, K.
Miguel Socolovich: 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 2 K.
Chase Bradford: 1.0 IP, 0 R, H, 0 BB.
Omar Quintanilla: 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB.

Wilmer Flores: 1-5, 2 RBI, R.
Anthony Seratelli: 3-3, 3B, 3 RBI, R.

A year ago, last May, after another in a long line of terrible outings by Carlos Torres, I said “It is time for the Mets to give up on Torres and cut him loose.” Immediately after that game, Torres turned his season, and his career, around. The rest is history, with Torres now an invaluable member of the Mets bull pen. So, now I am saying the same thing about Giancarlo Alvarado. It is time to give up on Alvaradio and cut him loose. If he too turns it around and becomes a valuable weapon in the Mets’ arm-ada, I will happily eat my words. But lightning rarely strikes twice in the same place.

Binghamton (52-37) blasts Portland (59 - 30) 11-4.

From the start of the game, this was a no doubter.

A good start for Cory Mazzoni: (W, 1-0) 5.0 IP, 3 R, 5 H, BB, K.
Randy Fontanez: 3.0 IP, 0 R, 2 H, BB, 5 K.
Jon Velasquez: 1.0 IP, R, 2 H, 0 BB.

Jayce Boyd: 3-4, BB, 2 RBI, 2 R.
Travis Taijeron: 3-5, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 3 R.
Xorge Carrillo: 3-4.

St. Lucie (52-32) not scheduled.

Savannah (59-26) smacks Augusta (59-26) 6-1.

A beauty for John Gant: (W, 9-4) 8.0 IP, R, 5 H, 0 BB, 10 K.
Paul Paez: 1.0 IP, 0 R, H, 2 BB.

Dominic Smith: 2-4, 2 R.

Cameron Griffin: 0.1 IP, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 H, BB, K.

Thomas Nido: 3-4, 2 RBI, R.

Game 2: Brooklyn (13-10) nips Hudson Valley (17-6) 3-2.

Cory Oswalt: (W, 2-0) 6.0 IP, 2 R, 1 ER, 4 H, 2 BB, 7 K.
Shane Bay: (S, 5) 1.0 IP, 0 R, H, 0 BB, 3 K.

Michael Katz: 2-3, 2B, 3 RBI. Katz’s base clearing double with the bags full was all the offense Brooklyn needed.

Kingsport (8-10) pummels Pulaski (10-8) 16-11.

Going into the 8th inning tied 8-8, Kingsport gave up 3 runs. Behind by 3, the K-Mets showed their mettle by putting up an 8 spot in the bottom of the inning, putting the game out of reach.

Andrew Massie: 4.2 IP, 4 R, 2 ER, 4 H, 4 BB, K.
Craig Missigman: 0.2 IP, 4 R, 2 H, 2 BB, 2 K.

  1. Hey Herb

I think Oberste is short for outburst. After a very quiet start to his career (.208 in Bklyn last year), he was a low power .244 thru June 28 this year). Pretty low key.

Then Matt Oberste went nuclear: 21 for 36, 5 doubles, 4 HRs and 16 RBIs in 9 games since. What it shows me is not to be too quick to categorize a guy. Good going, Matt.

  2. Hey Thomas-
Yhe outburst effect seems to hold true in many cases. Looking back, it seems that a number of players go along unnoticed for long periods of time, and then appear in the highlights for several days in a row. Some of them sink back into the depths, but a few continue to produce once they get untracked. I hope Oberste is one of those who has found the answer.
