August 22nd

The Cubs fell again in a day game at Wrigley, losing 8-2 to Houston. Once again the Mets had a chance to move within 6 of the division lead. New York struck quickly in this one. In the 2nd, following a Wayne Garrett walk, Ron Swoboda took Bill Singer deep. His fourth longball of the season put the Mets up 2-0. They followed up with another pair in the 3rd

Jerry Koosman cruised into the 7th but ran into trouble during the inning and was relieved by Tug McGraw, who after giving up two run scoring singles, settled down to pitch a 3 frame save-his 9th of the season. Koosman notched his 11th victory as the Mets (69-52) moved to within a half dozen games of Chicago (77-48) for the first time since late July.
