In front of 34,696 on a Sunday afternoon at Shea the Mets
rebounded from the Astro sweep with one of their own. New York took all three from
the NL West leading Braves (60-49) to remain 6.5 games behind division leading Chicago.
Gary Gentry cruised through the first 5 innings. The wheels came off in the Brave sixth. Atlanta crossed the plate 4 times –Millan and Tony Gonzalez knocked in three with run-scoring singles and 3B Bob Aspromonte chipped in with a sac-fly for the fourth run.

Tommie Agee smacked a double to lead off the bottom half of
the inning and when the dust settled New York tied it up at 5-5 thanks to a
combination of RBI singles, an E4 on Millan and a Buddy Harrelson sac fly. The
game remained knotted up through nine and into extras until Jerry Grote smacked
a walk-off HR off Claude Raymond in the 11th.
While the Mets were sweeping the team atop the NL West the
Cubs were breaking out the brooms against the basement dwelling Padres. New York wrapped up their homestand at 5-5,
kept pace with Chicago and now head to Cincinnati’s Crosley Field for a series
against the Reds. The road trip also includes stops in Atlanta and Houston. It
would not end well.
I was at the game. Grote's hit his home run over the right field fence. He's my all-time favorite Met. Thanks for stirring a great memory! :)
