New Britain 11 - Binghamton 7



The Binghamton Mets blew a two-run lead in the ninth inning and surrendered five score in the 11then route to an 11-7 loss to the New Britain Rock Cats in 11 innings on Wednesday night at NYSEG Stadium. The Rock Cats scored nine straight runs after trailing by four. Binghamton left the winning run at third base in both the ninth and tenth innings and left the bases loaded to end the game.

Clinging to a two-run lead in the ninth, Cody Satterwhite entered the game for Binghamton having not blown a save sinceMay 22. His first pitch was hit over the left-field wall by Tony Thomas. Satterwhite then walked Mike Kvasinicka. A sacrifice bunt, followed by a single moved the tying run to third base with one out. Eddie Rosario beat out a fielder’s choice and prevented the game-ending double play. That allowed Kvasnicka to cross the plate and knot the game at six.

After leaving runners in scoring position in the ninth and tenth, the wheels fell off for the B-Mets in the 11th. Adam Kolarek gave up a lead-off double to Kyle Knudson. Stephen Wicks entered as a pinch runner and made it to second a sac bunt by Corey Wimberly. There was no out on the play as Kolarek tried to get the lead runner at third base, but his throw was too late. Rosario plated the go-ahead run on a base knock. He stole second to put runners on second and third for Mike Gonzales. The slugger doubled home two more runners before Matt Koch came in to pinch run. Reynaldo Rodriguez reached on an error by Brian Burgamy at the third base to keep the inning going. Jorge Polanco ended Kolarek’s night with a two-run single to complete the five-run frame and put the Rock Cats in front, 11-6.

Binghamton started the scoring in the first inning. Burgamy worked a two-out walk against Cole Johnson. Jayce Boyd and Travis Taijeron smacked back-to-back doubles to put the B-Mets on top, 2-0.

New Britain got some two-out magic of its own in the second against Tyler Pill. Knudson reached with a double and Wimberly answered with a two-bagger of his own in cut the deficit to 2-1.
The B-Mets came back with a big third inning. Brandon Nimmo started the frame with the first of his two doubles. With two outs, Boyd tripled to bring a run across the plate. Taijeron brought home Boyd with a single and scored for himself on a Juan Centeno base knock to make the score 5-1.

The Rock Cats got one run back in the fourth. Pill surrendered a solo home run to Polanco to start the inning and make it a 5-2 ball game.

Binghamton extended its advantage back to four in the sixth against Alex Wimmers. Wilfredo Tovar singled and stole second base. Nimmo pounded a double that brought Tovar across the plate for the 6-2 lead.

The comeback started for New Britain in the seventh. Thomas reached base on strikeout, wild pitch against Randy Fontanez to start the inning. Knudson came through with a one-out single to put runners on the corners. Wimberly tallied a base knock to plate one run before Rosario reached on a fielder’s choice to score Knudson and bring the Rock Cats within 6-4.

The B-Mets left the winning run at third base in both the bottom of ninth and tenth innings. In the 11th, Burgamy tried to start a comeback with a lead-off walk. Singles by Boyd and Dustin Lawley loaded the bases with a two outs for Tovar. He singled home Burgamy and brought the tying run to the plate. However, Kyle Johnson grounded out to end the game.

Turpen (5-2) went the final 2-2/3 innings and gave up four hits, but no runs. Kolarek (1-2) surrendered five scores (four earned) in 1-1/3 frames. Satterwhite’s blown save was only his second in 17 chances this season. Pill tossed seven innings and struck out seven, but didn’t factor into the decision.
