St. Lucie 7 - Jupiter 1

A strong pitching performance by Robert Gsellman and four errors by the Jupiter defense led the St. Lucie Mets to a 7-1 win over the Hammerheads at Roger Dean Stadium on Monday.

Gsellman overcame two weather delays in the second inning that caused him to go well over an hour between pitches. He showed no ill effects and dominated the Hammerheads over six innings. He gave up just two hits – an infield single and double – while striking out six.

The Mets got the scoring started early with a pair of runs in the first against Sean Townsley. Champ Stuart led off with a single and Jeff McNeil walked. Michael Conforto followed with a rocket grounder to second that was botched by Avery Romero. Stuart scored on the error and McNeil advanced to third. Matt Oberste then drove McNeil in with a sac fly.

Maikis De La Cruz made it 4-0 in the sixth when he blasted a two-run homer, his third of the season. Victor Cruzado, who made it on in front of De La Cruz, reached on an error.

With runners at the corners in the ninth, the Mets added two runs when Yefri Perez dropped a fly ball in center off the bat of Stuart. McNeil completed the scoring when his single up the middle plated Stuart for the fifth unearned run of the game.

The lone Jupiter run came in the sixth. Gsellman walked Rehiner Cordova to start the inning and Cordova stole second. Gsellman commited a balk to move Cordova to third and then surrendered an RBI ground out.

Julian Hilario pitched a scoreless seventh and eighth. Akeel Morris closed out the game with a perfect ninth in a non-save situation.

De La Cruz and McNeil had two hits apiece. McNeil extended his hitting streak to seven games. He has four multi hit games in a row.

The game was delayed by lightning in the top of the second. After play resumed for five minutes, rain poured down and caused a 45 minute delay.
