The Binghamton Mets plated three runs in a five-pitch span to open the fourth and Rainy Lara tossed 5-2/3 scoreless innings in a 4-1 victory over the Richmond Flying Squirrels on Tuesday night at The Diamond. Jayce Boyd led the offensive charge with a three-hit game, highlighted by a pair of doubles.
Binghamton busted out the lumber and scored in a flash in the fourth. After TJ Rivera singled on the second pitch of the frame, Boyd yanked Matt Lujan’s next pitch inside the third-base bag. TJ Rivera scampered home on the double, barely beating Rando Moreno’s relay to the plate. Josh Rodriguez cleared the bases by blasting Lujan’s 1-0 offering over the left-center field wall for his league-leading seventh home run of the season.
Lara helped his own cause in the fifth, sparking a rally by ripping his first career double into left-field. Two batters later Brandon Nimmo brought him home by pulling an RBI single into the right-field alley.
Lara stumbled out of the gate, but recovered masterfully. The righty allowed the first two batters to reach in his sixth start, but induced Mac Williamson to roll into a double play. The twin-killing started a stretch in which the righty retired 13 of the next 15 batters he faced. He exited after surrendering a two-out single in the sixth.
Chase Huchingson took over and registered the final out of the inning before surrendering an RBI single to Moreno in the seventh. Paul Sewald took the reins and coaxed an inning-ending double play out of Angel Villalona. The righty struck out two in a perfect eighth and Jon Velasquez worked a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his eighth save.
Lara (3-1) scattered four hits while fanning four to earn the win. Lujan (1-3) was touched four runs on eight hits over six innings in the loss.
The B-Mets (19-13) conclude their three-game series against Richmond on Wednesday afternoon at 12:05 PM. RHP Gabriel Ynoa gets the ball against RHP Kyle Crick.
POSTGAME NOTES: The B-Mets have been held to five runs or fewer in the last nine games, their longest stretch since an 11-game streak in May 2011…the three-run win was Binghamton’s largest margin of victory since April 29 (W 8-3 @ Portland)…it was Jayce Boyd’s second three-hit game of the season Team press release
