Monday night John Mayberry’s infield hit in the bottom of
the 14th inning brought home Eric Campbell with the winning run, the
Mets beat the Cardinals 2-1. It was Harvey night at Citi Field. Matt Harvey was brilliant verses the
Cardinals, but gets his 2nd straight no decision despite not
allowing a run. What can you say about The Dark Knight? He went 8 scoreless
innings allowing just 6 hits while walking just 1 and striking out 9. The Mets took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the
4th inning. Curtis Granderson led off the inning with a double to
right. Eric Campbell grounded to the
right side to move Granderson to 3rd. Then Lucas Duda hit a ball
through a very odd infield in shift scoring Granderson. John Lackey started for
the Cardinals and was nearly as good a Harvey going 7 allowing 3 hits 1 run
(earned) walking 1 and striking out 6. Harvey has now thrown 16 straight
scoreless innings and his ERA has fallen to 1.98. Jeurrys Familia came in in the 9th
inning and allowed a one out single to Matt Adams. Pete Kozma ran for Adams and went to third on
a hit and run single by Yadier Molina. The Cards tied the game up when Jason
Heywood hit a sac-fly to tie the game at 1. For Familia, his first blown save
in 14 save opportunities. From there the Met bullpen shined Hansel Robles, Erik
Goeddel, Alex Torres and Carlos Torres all pitched scoreless relief. Alex Torres struck out all 4 batters he
faced, Carlos Torres pitched 2 scoreless and gets the win; he’s now 2-2. Samuel
Tuivailala takes the loss he’s 0-1. The
Mets win their first extra-inning outing of the year. They have now won 3
straight and take the 1st game of this huge 4 game series with the
Cardinals. They are now 16-4 at Home and
23-16 overall and with the Nationals idle; they extend their lead in the NL
east to 1 full game. Tuesday night is game two of the series, Jonathon Niese
(3-3 2.49) goes for the Mets, Michael Wacha (5-0 2.06) goes for St. Louis.
Familia should not have shaken off Plawecki - twice - before hanging an inside slider on a 2 strike count. I'd bet the house Plawecki wanted something down and away, preferably in the dirt.
ReplyDeleteCuddyer, stinks. Get him out of the meat of the lineup. He can't catch up to the fastball anymore.
IB, I was out last night and missed the 9th. Turned on radio
ReplyDelete, and when they were still playing, realized it was another Harvey ND. UGGH.
Saw replay of the sac fly. Was a very good pitch. Hitter lifted it practically off his shoe tops. It was a short fly. It is too bad it was hit to Grandy. Weak arm, and like many guys, takes a couple of steps to get rid of the ball.
By the time Gandy took his steps, runner was 2 steps closer to home. I'd run on almost everything if that is the best Grandy can do. If Lagares were there, runner would have been out by 5 feet or more.
Tom - Was referring to the 1st hit of the inning which set up the run. My bad. It had me talking to myself. Totally agree re. the sac fly and Granderson's weak arm.
ReplyDeleteHear you, IB.
ReplyDeleteBoy, the pen has been great, considering its many losses. Familia especially. I' m glad he looked steamed last nite after the inning was over. He's got a great closer's fire.
Let's hope for lightning in a bottle from Ceciliani.
