7/9/15

DOWN UNDER: Mets Minor League Results 7-8-15

Star of the night: Dominic Smith

Honorable mention: Lots of guys  -  Dilson Herrera, Jeff McNeil, Ivan Wilson, the Luis Boys of Kingsport, Gavin Cecchini, Michael Bernal, David Thompson, and the Brooklyn pen.

Las Vegas 10- Salt Lake 5

Binghamton 2- New Britain 3

St Lucie 3 - Charlotte 2

Savannah 1 - Lexington 2

Brooklyn 5 - Hudson Valley 2

Kingsport 8 - Elizabethton 2

Las Vegas battled for a bit as Rainy Lara struggled again to the tune of 4 runs and 7 hits in 4 innings.  But Vegas scored 10, with 3-5, 2 doubles from Herrera, Taijeron's 15th homer, 3 hits from Rolfing, and 2 from Cory Vaughn (.207).   Vic Black tossed a scoreless 9th, with a hit and 2 Ks.

Binghamton piled up 11 hits (3 by Cecchini and 2 by Nimmo, both now hitting .292) and 3 walks and pushed across 2 first inning runs, but nothing thereafter, leaving 12 men on.

Gabe Ynoa pitched a true Ynoa game, 8 innings, just. 78 pitches, no walks and only 2 Ks, but allowed 3 runs to take the loss.

St Lucie had big, bad Dominic Smith hit a 2 run Jack, a double, and a walk.  Jeff McNeil had 2 hits, and scored 2 runs, one of which was the result of a 9th inning walk off hit by Jairo Perez.  Casey Meisner had a no-decision in a solid start, helped by fine 7th inning relief by Mike Hepple. Kyle Regnault picked up the win with a scoreless relief effort.

Savannah bats were quiet; Martirez Arias tossed 6 inning of 1 run, 4 hit ball, but Jimmy Duff lost it in the 9th.

Brooklyn banged out 10 singles, 3 by Michael Bernal (.347) and 4 by high draftee David Thompson (.349). A strong start by Almonte, and the Cyclone pen was impenetrable again tonight.

Kingsport held "Luis Night" tonight, as SS Luis Carpio (.302) had 3 hits for the 2nd straight game and 3B Luis Ortega (.308) had 3 also. Dash Winningham had 2 more hits, a walk and an RBI,

Starter Harol Gonzalez was dandy, and newcomer Dillon Becker struck out 3 in the ninth.

GULF COAST LEAGUE TWINBILL:

1st game - Cards 6 - Mets 5

2nd game - Cards 9 - Mets 2

DSL GAMES:
Giants 4 - Mets #1 squad 2.  Giants are 25-9.

Mets squad #2 won 9-8 behind a balanced 12 hit attack and Misael Familia nabbing the save.

In the first GCL game, Ivan Wilson (3-4, 2 doubles, 2 RBIs) and Ali Sanchez (1-2, BB, 2 RBIs) helped stake the Mets to an early 5 runs, but soft pitching let it slip-slide away.   Wilson has gone 5 for 13 with 7 RBIs in his last 4 games, which is encouraging.

Game 2 was a one-sided loss, as Johnny Magliozzi and Gregorix Estevez both took a shallumping in relief.  Walter Rasquin had 2 hits in the nite cap to boost his average slightly to .417.  Keep it up, Walter, it's been a while since the Mets have had a .417 hitter.

GOATS: Johnny Magliozzi and Gregorix Estevez.

  1. Sorry Folks.....no Morning Report.

Walked into a shit storm here at work this morning.

Doesn't happen often....but it's hell when it does.

  2. I was watching Fulmer pitch today via the web on Milb baseball. Another very good start. Gave up one run. It was unearned, error by the 3rd baseman extended the inning in which the run was given up. 7 strikeouts and no walks in 7 innings. He looks like he can contribute at the MLB level right now in the pen. Mid 90s fastball. I didn't see anything like 98 or 99 which I read elsewhere but sat at 94-95. Very nasty upper 80s slider. Lots of late movement.
His landing foot lands towards 3rd base which causes him to throw across his body which helps the slider movement but puts extra stress on the throwing shoulder.
The announcer mentioned that he hasn't thrown his change up much during his recent surge. I don't remember him throwing anything but the fastball and slider the whole game. With the quality of those two pitches that is fine for AA or a MLB pen but he needs to develop a third pitch if he wants to make it as an MLB starter.

  3. Seems like Frank Viola could start working on that next year with him at Las Vegas. There is no need to rush him through the system until he masters the third pitch.

  4. Mack,

No sighting of Brandon Welch, Ty Williams, Alex Durham or Tom Szapucki yet? I know Welch was suspended, but are the rest hurt?

And what about that $219K of remaining signing dollars? Any HS pitchers lined up to take it before the signing deadline?

  5. Nothing on those guys that I am aware of, Buddy. For Desmond Lindsay and Szapucki, it is possible they want to work with them under the guise of being injured, to get them to the point they will succeed from game 1.
