Sunday afternoon in St. Louis, the Mets scored 2 times in
the top of the 18th inning. They hold on to beat the Cardinals in an
18 inning marathon 3-1. It was a scoreless pitcher’s duel for the first 13
innings. Met starter Jonathon Niese did his part continuing to pitch
outstanding ball. On Sunday Niese went 7 2/3 allowing just 5 hits while walking
1 and striking out 3. He obviously gets the no decision. Rookie Tim Cooney pitched 5 2/3 scoreless but
both were well out of the game by the time this one was resolved. In the top of the 13th Curtis
Granderson doubled and then came home with the go ahead run on a RBI single by Kevin
Plawecki. Jeurys Familia came in to
notch the save, but on his 2nd pitch in the bottom of the 13th
inning Kolton Wong hit solo homer down the right field line to tie the game at
1. It was the first blown save by
Familia this year. The game then went on scorelessly until the top of the 18th. The Mets opened up with back to back singles
by Wilmer Flores and Granderson. Cardinal
pitcher Carlos Martinez botched a sacrifice attempt by Plawecki to load the
bases. Ruben Tejada then hit a sac-fly
to deep right to score Flores. Eric Campbell then executed a squeeze play to
score Granderson and the Mets had the 2 run lead. 5 Met relievers had scoreless outings. Jenrry Mejia pitched 2 scoreless, Sean
Gilmartin pitched 3 scoreless innings and Carlos Torres pitched the final 2
scoreless. Torres picked up the win; he
improves to 3-4. Martinez took the loss for the Cards he’s now 10-4. The Mets tied a club record leaving 25
players on base in the game. The Mets
had 16 hits on the day. Tejada went 3
for 6, Flores wen t 3 for 9 to lead the way. Lead-off batter Juan Lagares batted
10 times with 2 hits. With the win the Mets salvage the final game of this three
games set. They are now 48-44 on the year and 16-30 on the road. The Nats were blanked by the Dodgers on
Sunday so the Mets are off to Washington to face the Nats in a 3 game series
now just down 2 games in the NL East. Monday night Matt Harvey (8-6 3.07) goes
for the Mets, Lefty Gio Gonzalez (6-4 3.99) goes for the Nats.
Wow
ReplyDelete16 hits and only 3 runs.
What a game. A lot of rubbish during that six hour marathon but at least they go into Washington with a win.
ReplyDeleteSweep the Nats and you're in first place, boys.
Crazy idea - anyone think Grichuk might be available? Young RH slugger to add to the core.
ReplyDeleteMichael
ReplyDeleteWhat core?
The one on its way. Future's stars Conforto and Nimmo, AA AS Cecchini, and possibly Duda (if he returns to form) and d'Arnaud (health).
DeleteMaybe we should wait and see some positive results after a full season at the major league level before these prospects are anointed the core.
DeleteRemember the majority of prospects do not become core players.
Expecting all of the Mets potentially graduating minor leaguers to succeed and also become core players may be a bit presumptuous.
I'm choosing to remain optimistic. They're getting positive press from outside the organization, it's usually teams boosting their own guys...and Mets prospects have historically had to over perform to get any recognition at all. Sure it's early, but not only are they showing promise the same pessimistic view was taken on our young pitching and now Smoltz himself is saying they're better than his Braves.
DeleteThere's a plan..I've bought into it from the beginning and I'm sticking to it. You're entitled to your opinion, but these kids have shown me everything I'd expect of them to be major league players.
Tell me it wouldn't be hysterical if Mets sweep Nats and take first place?
ReplyDeleteSounds ridiculous, but its Harvey deGrom Thor in the series.
I believe in Conforto, Nimmo, Rosario and Dom Smith.
ReplyDeleteNot sure if any of them will make all star teams or be 'core players' but each has a legit chance to live the ultimate dream of putting on a major league uniform................
And I refuse to leave out my man Jeff McNeil ;) I want him to be a 25th man utility guy on this team one day.
Yes, do not leave out Jeff McNeil. He will be a fine utility guy. Add 15 pounds, maybe a fine starting position player. 107 hits and a league leading .320 after he only hit .246 post-promotion in Lucie last year. But before that, he hit .329 in Kingsport and .332 in Savannah. 151 runs scored in 937 career at bats and 42 of 53 steals. Terrific career #s, except limited extra base hit production, and .308 since turning pro.
ReplyDeleteHe'd be in AA today we're it not for the B Met trio of Josh Rodriguez, L J Mazzilli, and Gavin C manning 3rd, 2B, and SS there. Josh is 30 and so should not really be in his way, but hard to push aside a guy like Josh with 14 HR, 57 RBI, and .285.
