AM I THE ONLY ONE EXCITED? WEEKLY MINORS RECAP: Tom Brennan
Mid-May 2016: the Mets' full season minors teams are at full throttle. How exciting!
So who's throttling? I will keep it short this week and focus only on this week's 12 stars. And forget who's sputtering - we'll go easy on the sputterers this week and give them a pass.
Oh, and I tend to cut a little slack for pitchers who may only get in one game for the week, and accordingly look at both their last week and their season as a whole when considering stars of the week.

MY 12 STARS OF THE WEEK:
AAA: 2B Dilson Herrera dropped some bombs and had 7 homers through Sunday. (He added his 8th homer and 10th double on Monday, too).
AAA: RHSP Rafael Montero - rumors of the precipitous demise of Mr. Montero were entirely and completely premature, as he had 2 scoreless outings this week (11.2 IP, 13 K)
AAA: RHSP Gabe Ynoa - dude eschews strikeouts (just 22 in 45.2 IP), but improved to 4-0, 1.77 over 7 starts, and the 3 no-decisions early on were well pitched, so he could have been 7-0. He's getting the job done.
AAA: RHRP Paul Sewald is 2.1, 1.89, 5 saves, 1.00 WHIP and 24 Ks in 19 IP. Paul never hits the wall, y'all.
AAA OF Ty Kelly: - .398/.486/.516 for 30 games. What's not to like? (Add in a 3 for 5 Monday night, boosting him to .404 in 115 plate appearances).AAA: RHSP Rafael Montero - rumors of the precipitous demise of Mr. Montero were entirely and completely premature, as he had 2 scoreless outings this week (11.2 IP, 13 K)

AA: DH/1B Matt Oberste: a sweet 10 for 22 with 2 homers and 7 RBIs, including a grand slam, lifting Oberste to a team-leading .321. Dominic Smith is envious.
HIGH A: RHRP Tim Peterson: He is Mets Minors Reliever of the Year so far, by far, with just 1 ER in 16,1 IP, 0.55 WHIP, and a ripping 28 Ks.
HIGH A: LF/1B Kevin Taylor: going into Sunday, he was on base 26 of 42 times and sits at .378/.495/.537 after 24 games. Just one error.
HIGH A C Tomas Nido: his 8 for 18 week lifted him to .318.
A: LHSP P.J. Conlon is a delightful 5-0, 1.23 ERA. Career ERA below 1.00.
A: RHRP Tyler Bashlor: in 9 games this year, 1.20 ERA and 20 Ks in 15 IP.
A: 3B David Thompson slowed up in RBIs but still has 36 in 35 games, which I believe is 3rd highest of any professional player, and is hitting a healthy .302.
Some other guys are having fine seasons (Travis Taijeron, Dominic Smith, Wuilmer Becerra, Vinny Siena, to name a few, and TJ Rivers, who on Monday climbed to .339 with 4 runs scored and 3 RBIs, giving him 31 Rib Eyes on the season already and closing in on Thompson).
They were not hot enough this in this past particular week (thru Sunday) to be included in my Stars of the Week, but they are stars of the season.
I was excited this week.
I suspect I'll be excited next week too.
What say you, reader?
I would be more excited if we called up someone other than Reynolds..
ReplyDeleteI agree - it should have been Rivera.
ReplyDeleteOn a side note, one guy who still fascinates me in Travis Taijeron. He has always been a continually improving but high K guy who beats up lefties, struggles with righties.
This year, just 3 for 26 vs. lefties so far but killing righties (.357/.435/.622 in about 115 plate appearances vs. righties, which is about what his stats were vs. lefties last year).
You have to figure the drop off vs. lefties is a temporary fluke, so I am real interested to see how he progresses as the season wears on.
He now (in 2015 and 2016) has 162 AAA games under his belt, with a .400 on base %, .540 slug % and 69 extra base hits. Maybe a Sept call up.
Tom
DeleteKelly leading the league in hitting over 400 and Rivera a hitting machine. If they keep it up it'll force Sandy's hand you would think.
I find it hard to believe at this point that Dilson Herrera won't be a star in this game.
ReplyDeleteYep, Dilson looks like the real deal. In non-contending seasons, he'd be the Mets' 2B right now.
ReplyDeleteLet's say for the sake of argument a fringe contender outside of this division loses its second baseman during June. Would you consider a Neil Walker trade and bring up Dilson Herrera if the intention is to let him walk as a FA at year's end anyway? I guess the question is whether the return on a Walker trade exceeds the potential of a supplemental draft pick plus the risk of Herrera not equaling the final couple of months of Walker productivity in orange and blue.
ReplyDeleteMets infield strong for years to come. Dom Smith 1b, Dilson Herrera 2b, Rosario SS, and with all due respect to Wright we have to find out next 3b of the future. I watch David Thompson stats in single A. But with those three alone that's potentially an all star infield. Bright future for this team .
ReplyDeleteReese.... "Trade Rules"--- Contending Teams Trade Prospects/Fringes for Everyday Players. Non Contenders Trade Pennant Pieces/Everyday PLayers for Prospects.
ReplyDeleteThere are some exceptions. ...Contending teams add NOWS.... Non-Contenders add LATERS
Thankfully, the prospect talk is not the only fun about this team anymore!!!
