Binghamton 7 - Portland 3

Tyler Pill tossed his first career complete game to help the Binghamton Mets end an eight-game losing streak and secure a doubleheader split against the Portland Sea Dogs on Saturday afternoon at Hadlock Field. After suffering a 13-2 blowout loss in the opener, Binghamton bounced back with a 7-3 victory in the finale.
Game One – Sea Dogs 13, B-Mets 2
The Sea Dogs chased Rainy Lara from the game in the second and hammered the B-Mets pitching staff for 14 hits in a 13-2 win in the opener.
Henry Ramos opened the scoring in a flash, depositing Lara’s second pitch of the day into the right-field seats for a leadoff homer. Rainel Rosario added an RBI single and Ali Solis capped Portland’s six-hit inning with a three-run double to the right-field alley.
In the second, Ramos went deep again and Nate Freiman added a sacrifice fly before Lara (2-4) was pulled from the game. The righty allowed seven runs on eight hits over 1-1/3 innings, his shortest professional start.
Solis hit a two-run homer off David Roseboom in the third before Portland added four more runs against Mike Hepple and Logan Taylor in the sixth.
Teddy Stankiewicz (1-2) stymied the B-Mets over seven innings. The right allowed two runs on six hits to earn his first career Double-A victory.
Binghamton’s only early offensive highlight came from a two-out rally in the third. Matt Oberste blooped an RBI double into left, plating Derrik Gibson with Binghamton’s only run. Stefan Sabol launched a solo homer, his first career Double-A long ball, in the seventh.
Game Two – B-Mets 7, Sea Dogs 3
Dominic Smith put the B-Mets on the board in the first against spot-starter Mitch Atkins. After Derrik Gibson singled to start the game and swiped second, Smith pulled a two-out single into right to give Binghamton the lead.
Smith struck again in the third. Following Matt Oberste’s double down the left-field line, Smith launched Atkins’ 2-2 pitch over the wall in left-center field for his fourth home run of the season. Kyle Johnson added to the lead with a solo shot to center in the fifth.
Pill and the B-Mets defense held the Sea Dogs scoreless through four innings before Portland broke free with three runs in the fifth. Derek Miller zipped an RBI  single into left and Cole Sturgeon cut Binghamton’s lead to one with a two-run homer to right.
Binghamton responded by throwing three runs on the board in the sixth against Nik Turley and Simon Mercedes thanks to a throwing error by Turley, an RBI single by Phillip Evans and a passed ball by Jake Romanski.
After Sturgeon’s homer, Pill didn’t let the Sea Dogs sniff the bases. The righty needed just 16 pitches to retire the final seven batters in order. Pill capped his first career wire-to-wire game with his only strikeout of the day, setting down Derek Miller on three pitches.
Pill (3-3) allowed three runs on six hits to pick up his third career win over the Sea Dogs. Atkins (0-1) lasted three innings in the loss.

  1. Time to promote Kevin Taylor to Binghamton...going 17 for 33 with 9 walks in his last ten games for St Lucie proves he is too good for A ball. Wouldn't ya say?
