Daytona 4 - St. Lucie 3

The Daytona Tortugas held off a ninth inning rally and beat the St. Lucie Mets 4-3 on Saturday at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. It was the second straight night Daytona edged the Mets by a run.

Michael Katz drew a bases loaded walk with two outs in the ninth to cut the Mets deficit to one, but John Mora swung at the first pitch and popped out to shallow left to end the game.

The Tortugas walked six batters over the final three innings but the Mets could only muster one run off the walks.

The game was tied 2-2 in the fifth when Daytona went up for good on a solo home run by Gavin LaValley.

The Mets had runners at the corners with one out in the eighth but Evan Mitchell struck out Tomas Nido and Jhoan Urena to get out of trouble. The Mets struck out 11 times after striking out 10 times in Friday’s 1-0 loss.

In the bottom of the eighth, back-to-back two out singles by Aristides Aquino and Angelo Gumbs provided a huge insurance for the Tortugas to give them a 4-2 lead.

Chris Flexen made a quality start but took the loss. He gave up three runs on just three hits in 6.2 innings.

Tortugas started Keury Mella struck out eight in seven innings and allowed just one earned run.

Luis Guillorme went 2 for 3 and reached base four times. He’s 5 for 7 with two walks in the series.

Champ Stuart’s 11-game hitting streak came to an end with a 0 for 4 day.

The Mets have lost three in a row for the second time this season and they’ve dropped five of their last six games. Daytona is now 8-2 against the Mets at Jackie Robinson Ballpark in the last three years.

  1. Flexen getting no support. Guillorme finally seems to be adjusting. Never thought I'd see Stuart with an 11 game hit streak - maybe there is hope there.
