Good
morning.
Dillon Cloud came out with his first mock draft,
Baseball Essential, on April 19th and Draft Site updated their two
round, 70 pick draft last Sunday. Lastly, Craig Lambert
put his 55 pick mock up as well on Draft Site.
So,
where does these three additional mocks (minus the three oldest) leave us
averaging –

Quinn Samford
We’ve
talked before, and posted video on Quatrill. He easily is one of the top
projected pitchers in the draft and, if he didn’t go down with injuries, could
have been the first pitcher picked this year. The only question I have is does Sandy Alderson have the cahoons to pick someone that
hasn’t thrown a pitch all year. We know the Nats do, but I can’t see the Mets
doing something like this.
As
for Okey, it’s tough for me to be objective here. My daughter graduated from
Clemson and we all wear the Tigers’ orange on Saturday game days.
Some
info on Okey –
Hitting - Okey is an average
hitter at the plate, with power potential (somewhere around 10-20 homers a
year). He squares up the ball well and has above average bat speed. Overall, he
has the makings of a late bloomer at the plate, just like Yadier Molina was.
Okey could potentially be a .300 hitter, but it may take a while for him to
develop.
Fielding - Very talented
catcher with an exceptional arm. He’s probably the best defensive catcher in
the 2016 draft. His athleticism will also give him an ability to play other
positions at the next level if a team feels like he’s not a pro catcher.
Baserunning - Not many catchers
have average speed and Okey is right on the verge of being above average. He
could potentially be a base running threat if he plays another position like
second base, since that won’t do too much damage to his knees.
Regarding
Quinn –
OF Heath Quinn (Samford) –
.330/.455/.679 with 22 BB/27 K
Like Neuse just missing the
cutoff for .500/.700 by a few bombs, Quinn came into the weekend in need of
just a few extra trips to first base (or any other base for that matter) to
push his OBP over .500. Along the way his slugging dipped below the .700 line,
but we’ll still count it since I used Friday’s numbers to originally sort
(through the NCAA stats page) despite displaying stats as of the end of the
weekend (via the more quickly updated team sites). Quinn is a physical 6-3, 220
pound outfielder with speed, power, and a solid approach. I’ve heard some
speculate that he’s hurt some by the overwhelming presence of Kyle Lewis in his
conference, but I think that’s nuts. There’s plenty of scouting love to go
around, and the more general exposure the SoCon gets, the better it is for
every team and every player.
Mack, I like your projected picks. Don't let another Giolito pass us by.
ReplyDeleteWilmer Flores: you are good, very good. Your start? Not so good, but everyone knows you are very good. It will come. Don't press...enjoy the party! You will hit soon enough.
