St. Lucie, Clearwater split doubleheader

The St. Lucie Mets and Clearwater Threshers split their doubleheader on Wednesday at Tradition Field. The Mets blanked the Threshers 3-0 in game 1, while the Threshers rebounded for a 4-2 victory in game 2.

In game 1, Ricky Knapp tossed a complete game shutout. He scattered three hits while striking out four. He did not walk a batter but he plunked two.

The Mets got on the board in the first inning when Champ Stuart led off with a double and scored on Amed Rosario’s base hit. The Mets went up 2-0 in the second when Patrick Biondi punched a two-out RBI single into left field that plated Tomas Nido.

Jhoan Urena provided an insurance run with a two-out single in the bottom of the sixth to make it 3-0.

Knapp cruised through the first six innings. He did not allow hit until Zach Green’s one out double in the fifth.

The Threshers loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh but Knapp retired pinch hitter Chase Numata on liner to left. Knapp only need 78 pitches (58 strikes).

In game 2, Andrew Pullin slugged a two-run homer in the first to spark the Threshers offense against Scarlyn Reyes.

Stuart countered with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the first, but that would be all for the Mets against Threshers starter Ranfi Casimiro.

Casimiro limited the Mets to three hits and one run over six innings. He retired the last nine batters he faced.

Reyes could not match Casimiro’s efficiency. Reyes walked two batters in the second and threw a wild pitch which helped lead to two runs and a 4-1 Threshers lead.

The Mets plated a run on a passed ball in the bottom of the seventh but Jesen Therrien was able to avoid further damage to collect his third save.

Stuart extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a hit in each game.
