Earlier today I admonished the GM for not doing anything. Perhaps I should have been a little more specific.
Today the Mets signed journeyman Justin Ruggiano, released by a good team because he was not deemed capable of contributing to the goal of pursuing a pennant. For his career he's had roughly the equivalent of two full seasons of play with 1260 ABs. During that time he's posted a .250 batting average and just a .250 OBP. Isn't that one of the key problems the team is trying to solve -- getting on base? To be fair, he's slugged about 24 HRs per "season" over that aggregate number of ABs but he's also fanned 180 times per "season", too. He's another all-or-nothing type in the mold of latter day Curtis Granderson, but in mirror image.
At minimum wage he's not costing much to fill the vacancy, but if they're going to squander a 40-man roster spot you'd think they might have looked internally at someone like Travis Taijeron. It's not the worst move they could have made but it's far from the best.
I wished for Lucroy. I don't want Jay Bruce.
ReplyDeleteRuggiano hit .226 in 44 AAA PCL games, far below Taijeron's #s' so Travis must be quite upset at being passed over. He is hitting nearly .300 with 56 extra base hits in 97 games, along with 74 RBI.
ReplyDeleteRuggiano, in fairness, has had modest big league success in the past. The Mets may feel Travis' high K rate is unworkable on a big league level.
Lucroy, as good as he may be, is not going to be enough to make up for the injuries the Mets have sustained this year.
ReplyDeleteMoving forward into next year, Lucroy will be a very good addition.

Bob, if Cespedes goes on DL, all the kings horses will not put Humpty Dumpty together again. Wheeler and Duda (the supposed cavalry) still not in rehab games
ReplyDeleteDuda .794 lifetime OPS versus Loney .784 2016 OPS/.750 lifetime---- Duda is NOT superman compared to Loney, and you give up a lot of Glove with Duda.
