YANKS BRILLIANT, METS DUMB

YANKS BRILLIANT, METS DUMB by Tom Brennan

So the other shoe dropped.   Yanks trade another of their pantheon of recently acquired bullpen greats, Andrew Miller, for Cleveland's #1 prospect and some other valuable pieces.  This just days after trading Aroldis Chapman for a great Cubs' #1 prospect and some other valuable pieces.

They signed these two superior superior relievers, got great, terrific, exciting production from them, then got great prospects in two great trades.   BRILLIANT.

The Mets, #2 but not trying harder, always half step, signing dudes like de Aza and Bastardo, with fingers crossed.  DUMB.

The Yanks will likely re-sign Chapman in the off-season, too.
They know quality and ain't shy to get it.

Heck, they'll probably sign Cespedes too this offseason when he opts out of his contract the Mets.  Of course, the Mets could and should have signed with Cespedes long term last off-season when he was cheap.  DUMB.

Mets should have done what it took to land Lucroy - too cautious…too DUMB.  But now that Lucroy turned down Cleveland, maybe the Mets will get lucky and snag him after all.

Yanks will return to dominance next year.  The Mets have a long term plan…of keeping their fingers crossed.  DUMB.  Please stop being dumb..

  1. how are the Yankees going to compete next year? These players they received aren't ready to carry a major league team so you're wrong. The Mets did this 5,6,7 years ago. The Mets are beyond that point. The Yanks are starting over. Don;t post bullshit because your frustrated dude

  2. Thank you for your kind thoughts, Fred. The Yanks are not done by a long shot. I am not a Yank. Fan, been a Mets fan since 1962. Yanks' moves getting these guys, getting great performances out of them, then flipping them, were brilliant. If I'm wrong about Yank dominance next year, they'll be back by 2018. I can't picture it any other way. They lust for World Series titles. Mets hope for an occasional visit. History speaks for itself.

    1. They got great. Years out of A Rod, who Mets passed on many years ago. And Teixera, and Sabathia. I agree that older guys should not get mega-year contracts. Does not negate the brilliance of the Chapman and Miller signings and sellings.

  5. BRILLIANT? The Yankees have been rotting out for several Years. They finally seem to be turning the page. So, they bought some trade chips that they're now re-selling????? They've squandered more opportunity than they've captured, and they have a long way to go.

Like it or not, the Mets have a starting point---ARMS. A quick and proper re-shape of the Positional lineup puts them right in the chase for 17,18...not to mention the balance of this year.

My critique of Alderson would not include "Why can't we be like the Yanks?".

  6. Tom - I think the Yanks have come to the realization that they're old and need to rebuild from within. They got some fine prospects. Good for them. But, I don't think it follows that the Mets FO has been dumb. Two different organizations at different points.

We all get the frustration. Watching this team will age you fast.
Nice turnaround win yesterday. Let's see what happens.

  7. I agree, IB. Let's win some games.

My focus was not on the Yanks' recent excessive contracts (Ellsbury and the like), which in earlier years were the type of mega-signings that helped keep them annually in the playoffs, it should be noted...it was on being willing to sign two stellar relievers by spending a little bit outside of a budget, knowing that they would be highly attractive "sell" pieces at the right time and (considering the talent garnered in return, and the added gate from excitement and helping the Yanks be more successful while there) far cheaper overall than signing average type older guys and hoping for the best. I think they were brilliant on those two players, and it helped position them for a quick rebuild.

The Mets have half-stepped too much - did not pursue Sheffield, who was tremendous afterwards with Yanks - and signing Bay and even Grandy for moderately large contracts. Sometimes, you spend huge and get a lot better quality.

Ellsbury, I would not have signed at the time for that length and $$$ if I were Yanks' GM. That was NOT Yank brilliance. McCann, as with any aging catcher, is a big gamble. They took the gamble and lost - they took the Beltran old guy deal and won. But d'Arnaud is also showing young catchers can falter too.

  8. Yanks paid premium $$ for Miller and Chapman. What did they get?

    Combined:

    12-3, 65 saves, 1.82 ERA, 221 K in 138 innings. 14.4 K's per 9 IP.

    That's A++++++ performance.

Then flipped them for great prospects.

    Brilliant.

  9. The Yankees spend $$$$ we don't. The Yankees don't wine about bad FO contracts they just move on to the next one. Lets face as I've said many times before if Sandy's deal for Gomez went through what would we be talking about now ....the fight for 4th place. Sandy got REAL lucky twice with Cespedes but does anyone here really think if he wants 100 million plus this winter we'll be signing him? Also if it's Bruce we get where does TC play everyone....unless YC is hurt worse than their letting on.

  10. Not keen on Bruce. He hit just .220 in 2014 and 2015. Career season underway this year (.265, 25, 80 in 97 games). But which Bruce would we get?

If we have to give up Conforto, may be too much. We better not even think about Amed for him.

  11. Maybe if the Mets take Braun and his contract it would help to get Lucroy.

    Move Granderson.

Bruce can also play 1st base.
Not sure if Braun can still play 3rd...

  12. Maybe they could also get Gardner from Yankees as leadoff man? If reasonable and can still play cf

  16. Forget Sheffield....
How about missing out on Juan Gonzalez because of being cheap?

  17. Bob, good point - while eraff may want us to get over long-past decisions, recall that the Mets passed on an interested A Rod in 2004 in his prime, due to $$. I believe A Rod had an opt out after 2007, and the Mets could have let him walk then (Yanks dumbly signed him to huge bucks for 10 more years). But those 4 years from 2004-2007? A Rod hit .305 and averaged 28 doubles, 43 homers and 128 RBIs. As you know, the Mets have never had a guy hit that many homers or knock in that many runs in any single season, not much average it over 4 years.
