Mack – 2017 Draft – Joe Perez, Jeremy Montalbano, Jared Poche, Tyler Johnson

Archbishop Edward McCarthy HS (FL and Miami commit) Joe Perez sitting 93-94 touching multiple 95s and 98 once on multiple guns. Slider was 78-80

2016 National Showcase   Jun 15, 2016 - PG Grade: 10 - Joseph Perez is a 2017 3B/1B/RHP with a 6-3 205 lb. frame from Pembroke Pines, FL who attends Archbishop Edward McCarthy HS. Big and strong athletic build, pretty mature physically. Right handed hitter, took an outstanding BP, showed big bat speed and raw pull power, used his lower half very well, ball explodes off the bat. Swings were more tentative in the games without the same aggressiveness and bat speed. Big arm strength at third base, stays balanced well and fields the ball out front, also plays first base. Potential primary pitcher in the future, has limited present experience on the mound. Shows big arm strength from a high energy delivery, big downhill plane to the plate, fastball topped out at 96 mph early before settling down. Slider flashed big vertical depth at times. Power arm with a power bat. Good student, verbal commitment to South Florida.

Tulane senior C Jeremy Montalbano had surgery to repair a torn ligament in ankle & a plate inserted where he broke his fibula on play at plate Sun

Nola.com: - When injuries left the Green Wave shorthanded in the bullpen last season, Montalbano threw seven innings of relief during the year to help his team out. But his foray onto the mound was quickly brought to an end when Montalbano suffered an elbow injury that would require him to undergo Tommy John surgery during the offseason.

The redshirt senior has gone through a rigorous process to get his arm back in shape and prepared for the season, and though Tommy John surgery usually results in pitchers missing an entire year, Montalbano said he expects to be "a full-go" when the Green Wave opens the season on Feb. 17 against Army.

D1 Baseball - Jared Poche once again was thrust into the spotlight this past weekend in Houston. LSU heralded righty Alex Lange didn’t have a great start against TCU and the Tigers had to go to their bullpen early in the game. Therefore, they desperately needed a strong start from the Lutcher, La., native in the second game against Baylor. He didn’t disappoint. He struck out five, didn’t walk anyone and allowed just three hits in seven shutout innings. For the season, Poche has now thrown 22 innings and surrendered just four hits.

South Carolina closer Tyler Johnson to miss some time with arm soreness.

Perfect Game - PG Grade: 8.5 - Tyler Johnson is a 2014 RHP/OF with a 6-2 170 lb. frame from Midlothian, VA who attends Trinity Episcopal School. Tall lean athletic build, very projectable body, good pitcher's build. Pitches from a three quarter arm slot, long loose arm action, good extension out front, long in back. Has a slight wrap early in the backside of his arm action but works through it easily with quick loose arm. Offline to 1B side of the rubber, better direction should add velocity to fastball in addition to physical projection. Maintains arm speed well on changeup, changeup is plus at times but lacks consistency at this point. Curveball flashes bite and throws it for strikes. Throws a lot of strikes, has an idea how to pitch. Has some flaws but when he cleans them up he has a chance to become a very high level prospect at the next level, impressive raw tools. Solid hitter and OF as well but upside is on the mound. Very good student. Verbal to South Carolina.
