"Been a long time, been a long time,
been a long, lonely, lonely, lonely time." Led Zeppelin
In a season where virtually everything went wrong for the Metsies, the crosstown Bombers are in their ascendancy.
The Yanks finished their season in a surge, won their Wild Card game as expected, and then won an improbable best of 5 after being down 0-2 to what had been the hottest team in baseball.
If they win 2 more rounds, along with getting World Series rings, they will ride up the Canyon of Heroes in a blizzard-like ticker tape parade....with a team good and young enough to do it a few more times in upcoming years.
The Mets ride sadly in a Canyon of Zeroes.
As in ZERO world series rings and ticker tape parades in 31 years, and ONE ticker tape parade in the past 48 years.
That, by the way, is 336 doggie years, so Mets fan pups are not happy either.
Well, the Mets did get to the World Series twice since 1986, but lost convincingly both times, kind of like the NBA Nets, who got schlumped twice in the NBA finals and who, like the Mets, are not the first team the average American sports fan thinks of as being exciting.
Since 1962's inception, the Mets made it to the venerated Canyon of Heroes twice, in 1969 and 1986.
Both times, I had the feeling we'd repeat the next season.
Both times, I forgot these were the Mets: only "repeat?"
Mediocrity. Lots of repetition in mediocrity.
The Yanks?
They have spent much time traversing said canyon.
They welcomed the Mets to town, winning in 1961 and 1962.
They won in 1977, 1978, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, and 2009.
Nine times.
Will I run out of fingers when they perhaps win # 10 this season? I can always then count with my toes.
And of course I ignore here the innumerable Yankee Championships pre-1961 to keep from getting too depressed.
The Yanks are Heroes...the Mets, sadly, are Zeroes. Always searching for answers for their ineptitude. Simple...ZEROES.
For Mets fans, it has been a long and lonely time indeed. We are only comforted by knowing that ownership hopes to reduce payroll in 2018.
Long...and...lonely. And getting longer and lonelier.
LOL, is it necessary to dump on the Mets every day? I mean, just because they give us sooooooo many reasons to dump on them, need we always exercise that right?
ReplyDeleteCan’t the Coupons just for a little while escape from their endless harassment while knowing they can keep screwing the fan base because there isn’t anyone to hold them accountable and the fans keep buying tickets anyway?
I challenge anyone reading this to tell me of a single person in the Mets leadership totem pole that requires accountability.
We are like the lad in Les Miz who shouted out "Revolution!" If the Wilpons were to sell, the theme song would be, "Do you hear the people sing?"
ReplyDeleteThe Wilpons run the Mets knowing that the Yankees, as Pedro so aptly once put it, are their Daddy
Speaking of Led Zep how about "Communication Breakdown" or perhaps "Heartbreaker" while hoping for "Your Time is Gonna Come" followed by "Celebration Day" but for now I'm stuck with "I Can't Quit You Babe".
ReplyDeleteGary, nice...on a roll!
ReplyDeleteOf course, The Prayer is what is needed:

George Thorogood has a whole repertoire of songs for what it takes to be a Mets fan..."If You Don't Start Drinkin' I'm Gonna Leave", "One Bourbon, One Scotch and One beer", "Bad to the Bone", etc...
ReplyDeleteHow bout 'Lay Lady Lay'?
ReplyDeleteOops... sorry... that's Harvey's song.
All good choices, but Neil Diamond just suggested "Songs Sung Blue" (Every Mets fan knows one)
ReplyDeleteOr the ballad of every Mets fan by the All Star Break -- Huey Lewis' "I Want a New Drug"
ReplyDeleteOr The Ramones' "I Wanna Be Sedated"
Or the Pink Floyd refrain, "Comfortably Numb".
David Bowie's you can be heroes just for one day?
ReplyDelete"Why Don't We Do It on the Road?"
