Nick Cafardo/Boston Globe said that the Mets are taking a look-see at 1B Adrian Gonzales. Gonzalez was released by the Braves earlier in the day.

The Orioles OF, Hyun Soo Kim, signed a 4-year, $11.5Bil won ($10mil) deal with the LG Twins of the Korean League.

Boston resigned 1B Mitch Moreland to a 2-yr, $13mil deal.

  1. I'd be all over Adrian Gonzalez as it would open up the possibility of trading Dom Smith in a deal to improve elsewhere and serve as a bridge to Peter Alonso. I don't like giving up prospects, but the cupboard is bare in the minors, so you have to give to get.

Of course, if he went for a mediocre hitter like Jason Kipnis Or Josh Harrison then I'll be lighting the first torch.

  2. Reese, what do you think Gonzalez has left? I did not follow his down season last year. Is there a real chance he can bounce back to be better than, say, Duda?

  3. Thomas -

Gonzalez hated sitting on the bench.

Could have been a factor in his last year.

  4. Reese,
Just keep Smith in AAA until the All Star and if Gonzo is doing good and the Mets are not, trade him. If not, release him and bring up Smith. Win win in my view.

  5. Well, the issue is whether or not Smith can help the team net someone to play CF, starting pitching or 2B. You could theoretically go with Gonzalez at minimum wage and Wilmer Flores as the backup plan at 1B and afford to do it from a resource standpoint.

The question is will what you get in return for a 22 year old who has hit at every level be worth sacrificing him before he really got started a'la Ken Singleton.

  6. My question is why people are so ready to give up on one of the most highly regarded products of our farm system because he showed little in such a short trial last year.

Not good enough to get a full time shot here, but we can find a GM elsewhere to give us top talent in return?

    Give me a break! 😡

Sign Gonzo to a MnL deal and let him compete for a job in ST. Smith has hit and fielded well everywhere he's played. Don't turn him into another Amos Otis.

    1. Bill, I just don't understand why people all live in the past. If AGone had any value, would not Atlanta get a warm body for him and still pay down the salary?

    2. Yes, Tex. What I find amusing is that some of the people advocating Gonzo and trading Smith are the same ones who have criticized Sandy for acquiring over-the-hill bets from the bargain bin and giving playing time to them instead of to the kids with upsides.

  7. To sign AGon for MLB minimum seems a no brainer to me. He is only 2 years removed from a 4.0 WAR, .830 OPS year. But I wouldn't trade Smith expecting Gonzalez to be a big contributor now. Smith goes to AAA while Gonzalez proves he can still do it. If he has some trouble, they could always platoon him with Flores.

  8. No one here is actively campaigning to get rid of Smith nor to declare him a failure. The point is you have to give to get and if you can have a quality player like Gonzalez with Flores at backup and it enables you to acquire someone who can help another position of need, you at least have to listen.

  9. What makes Gonzo still a "quality player"?
