Florida 1 - St. Lucie 0

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (May 9, 2018) – Florida’s Lucas Herbert hit a solo home run in the eighth inning to propel the Fire Frogs to a 1-0 win over the St. Lucie Mets on Wednesday at First Data Field.

The long ball was the only mistake given up by Mets starter Gabriel Llanes, who was otherwise brilliant. Llanes pitched eight innings, allowed just the one run, scattered six hits, walked one and struck out four.

At one point in the game Llanes retired 13 in a row and 15 out of 16. He only needed 93 pitches over his eight innings.

Fire Frogs starter Jeremy Walker blanked the Mets over six innings. Reliever Thomas Burrows kept the Mets off the board in the seventh and eighth innings to get the win. Justin Kelly retired the side in order in the ninth for the save.

The Mets only had one scoring chance. With one out in the first inning, Andres Gimenez doubled and went to third base on a wild pitch. Desmond Lindsay followed with a walk. Dash Winningham struck out for the second out, then Lindsay was caught stealing second to end the inning.

The Mets didn’t put a runner in scoring position the remainder of the game. A big part of that success for Florida was Herbert. He caught three Mets trying to steal second.

Gimenez went 2 for 4.

Gene Cone’s nine-game hitting streak came to an end. He went 0 for 3.

Florida leadoff hitter Cristian Pache went 3 for 4 with a double.

The Mets lost 1-0 for the third time in three weeks. Florida rebounded from Monday’s loss to take the final two games of the series.

The Mets (13-18) continue their home stand on Thursday when they welcome the Lakeland Flying Tigers to town. First pitch at First Data Field is set for 6:30 p.m.
