Tom Brennan – METS MINORS FIELDING OBSERVATIONS

Tom Brennan – METS MINORS FIELDING OBSERVATIONS

When we write about prospects, we almost always focus on how they hit.
Today, though, let’s look at raw, basic fielding stats for guys, by position.

Stats are from last week, but fielding stats don't normally fluctuate like hitting ones.
My criteria for players' inclusion in this list are at least one of the following 4 points:
  1. Hitting well this year
  2. High draft pick
  3. More likely than not to make the majors at some point
  4. Not a journeyman

FIRST BASE

AAA - Dominic Smith: 1 error in 46 G (plus no errors in 5 OF games)
Gold Glove Caliber - a Vacuum Cleaner: let's rename him HENRY.

AA - Peter Alonso: 6 errors in 46 G (major progress, but still a bit high)

A - Jeremy Vasquez: 4 errors in 52 G

SECOND BASE

AAA – Gavin Cecchini: 3 errors in 18 G (plus 0 errors in 11 games at shortstop) – much improved

AA – Jeff McNeil: 5 errors in 41 G (plus 3 errors in 12 games at 3B and SS).  Historically fields better.

THIRD BASE

AAA – David Thompson: 3 errors in 21 G

A - Michael Paez: 8 errors in 44 G; 2 errorless games at 2B.  Has played SS also as a pro.

A – Blake Tiberi: 7 errors in 45 G

SHORTSTOP

A – Andres Gimenez: 8 errors in 50 G (plus 0 in 2 games at 3B)

CATCHER

AA – Pat Mazeika: 2 errors in 40 G; 15 of 41 caught stealing

AA – Tomas Nido: 1 error in 31 G (18 with Mets); 9 of 24 caught stealing

A – Anthony Dimino: 1 error in 13 G; 5 of 26 caught stealing; nine passed balls - learning.

A – Scott Manea: 2 errors in 25 G; 16 of 27 caught stealing!!!

A – Ali Sanchez: 2 errors in 26 G; 14 of 32 caught stealing !

OUTFIELD

AAA – Kevin Kaczmarski: 1 error in 20 G

AA – Tim Tebow: 1 error in 35 G; 2 assists (I'm surprised at this).

AA – Kevin Taylor: 1 error in 33 G; 6 assists.  Plus two errors in 7G at 1B.

AA – Jhoan Urena: 3 errors in 41 G; 5 assists.  Plus 2 errors in 5 games at 3B.

A – Desmond Lindsay: 1 error in 40 G; 5 assists.

A – Quinn Brodey: 2 errors in 50 G; 6 assists.

A – Raphael Gladu: 2 errors in 46 G; 5 assists.

A – Matt Winaker: 1 error in 41 G; 2 assists.

A – Wuilmer Becerra: 1 error in 12 G.

Overall, these guys collectively seem to really minimize errors.  Nice.

  1. I not only join you on the surprise for Tebow, but also Thompson (who rehabbed for the Cyclones last night)

  2. Run prevention (pitching AND fielding) is just as important as hitting, IMO.

Sure, the teams that bash the hell out of the ball can get it done, but in a high pressure environment (playoffs, World Series), it is usually the small things done well (or not, like our Mets in 2015) that decide a series.

Ideally, you want a team that excels at both.

  3. Mike, I want a team that can 1) HIT 2) PITCH, and 3) FIELD, in that order.

    We're not so bad at # 2.
