Yes, it is early, but
you have to start somewhere, right?
This is my first mock
draft. It averages 10 mocks that were released in the last 60 days.
A couple of things.
This is the year of the infielders, with the emphasis on
shortstop
This is NOT the year of right-handed starters
There are only two great catchers, both of which will be long
gone before we pick at #12.
The players I show as our first two picks at #12 and #42 are
not my picks. They are the average of the mocks I used. I would not have
picked two starters with these picks.

I want hitters -- preferably contact hitters with power. They are few and far between.

ReplyDeleteIf we want a power hitter, we all need to light a candle that Rece Hinds is still available when our pick comes up
High school kid out of the Florida Panhandle (Niceville Senior HS).
Perfect Game:
Rece Hinds is a 2019 SS/3B/OF with a 6-4 210 lb. frame from Niceville, FL who attends Niceville HS. Big and strong athletic build, long arms and room to get stronger. Third base tools defensively, has outstanding raw arm strength, good one spot lower half quickness and athleticism. Right handed hitter, elite level power with big raw bat speed and extension through contact, can get long and around the ball at times but can launch them to where others can't when everything comes together, has the ability to drive the right centerfield gap at times as well. Good student, verbal commitment to Louisiana State. Selected to play in the 2018 Perfect Game All American Classic.
There is a good chance he will still be there.
I think you have to go best player available, right?
ReplyDeleteIt's not like we are dominant in any particular area, big league club and the minor leagues included. Having a strategy for the overall draft is a good thing (like stocking the OF or finding a prospect Catcher), but with the first pick you can't ignore a talented player and go with someone else who better fills a need, IMO (unless the BPA also lines up with a need, of course).
Just my two cents
I've never been a fan of lumberjacks and windmills. That's why I tell Alonso that if he is striking out more than 20%, he will stay in the minors. He will always hit homeruns, but I don't want him turning into Lucas Duda. Likewise, the Mets need to draft good hitters. Hitters can develop power because of their good eye. Look at Rendon on Washington, Murphy on the Mets, and even Conforto. When a player becomes dependent on selling out for the homerun, i.e. Bryce Harper, his numbers will surely suffer. I want hitters, preferably athletic hitters, not power hitters.
ReplyDeleteTwo more cents.
Rece Hinds - a name to remember.
ReplyDeleteThis is all Jeff McNeil's fault - if he wasn't so good, we'd be drafting much earlier next June!

ReplyDeleteYou build your draft board, by position, like Walter Football does.
Youn also have a second internal draft pick that lists all the players and averages all the offensive and defensive grading numbers.
When it is your turn, you make the decision between the top picks on all these rankings.
Example...
The Michael Conforto pick came up #1 as an OF and overall.
The opposite was Brandon Nimmo which was a gut feel pick.
I have always been a 'best player available' for the first 2 rounds but you can't turn your back when a team is lacking big bats.
