Mack… Position By Position Analysis: OF

Good morning.

We continue with a projection for the 2019 outfields in the pipeline.

One thing first.

Every team needs three starts and at least two backups. I’m not going to project these players by whether they play left, center, or right field. We all know that can change daily. I will project the ones I expect to make the rosters.

Summary –

1.    This is not a position that is full of depth talent.

2.    The Syracuse situation is fluid. I had Patrick Kivlehan listed as my starting first baseman, and also playing in the outfield this coming season, but he chose free agency this past week. In addition, I had Matt den Dekker as the Mets 5th outfielder in Queens, due to the fact that Yoenes Cespedes will still be on the DL for quite a while, but he elected free agency last week.. Lastly, I list Biondi going back for another chance in Binghamton; however, his future is tentative at best unless he can start hitting better.

3.    Regarding Binghamton, Brody simply needs more at bats in Lucy before being promoted to NY State. Once that happens, look for Gladu and Zanon to probably be waived. This also is probably the last chance for Lindsay to prove that drafting him was the right thing to do. I see Zanon being waived before the season starts.

4.    We are short an outfielder in St. Lucie. The Mets never assign a draft pick this high so I assume we’ll fill this in with an Indy or AAAA player.

5.    Columbia is loaded. Lagrange is a ‘red’ prospect while Media and Rasquin shine ‘blue’. Adolph is right behind them. This is great news for a team that is lacking depth in most positions, especially the outfield.

6.    Brooklyn is even better. Kelenic and Beracierta both project as future major league outfielder and I have Granadillo painted ‘blue’.

7.    Past that, we look for former big time bonus boy Hernandez to come stateside and play for the GCL Mets.

8.    Lagrange, Kelenic, Beracierta, and Hernandez are the “red”prospects.

Comclusion:

I like what’s going on in the lower levels but there simply isn’t enough red meat in the pipeline at these positions. There is no one projected either in Syracuse or Binghamton that show the whiff of being a major league starter someday.

  1. In the upper minors, I only see Quinn Brodey and Matt Winaker as future MLB OF possibles. Tebow could make it, but in truth, I think his career will be short-lived...he just got started too old.

Kevin K has just never gotten his power game going, so I think he will be nothing more than an emergency call up.

Urena is a free agent who could be back, but his progress has been slower than Cesar Puello and he never really made it.

I think Wagner Lagrange lacks power, hurting his chances like it does for Kevin K. Rasquin could be a scrappy 5th outfielder some day, but again, lacking power.

Zanon had a bad 2018, and it does not bode well for 2019.

Ross Adolph had a very impressive Brooklyn debut. If he proves in 2019 that 2018 was not a fluke, the triples machine could be on everyone's radar screen this time next year. The same applies to Grandillo and perhaps Beracierta, although he slumped a lot in late 2018 after a stunning start.

I was quite excited about Dirocie's start last season but he sputtered in Brooklyn, so I see storm clouds ahead for him.

Lastly, but should be firstly, Kelenic is the class of the Mets OF minors, and I sure hope will be a future MLB All Star level guy like Christian Yelich. We need a home-grown Christian Yelich. Kelenic had a much better rookie year than Nimmo, and I hope he is better long term - which would be great.

Overall, outfield should be a power position - I see a power deficit in this collective group.

  3. Nice photo! I loved that band......lots of memories.

Anyway, I agree that OF is a veritable wasteland in the upper levels. Fortunately, we have Nimmo and Conforto in place as younger players under control
    for a few more years.

This is why I want a CF'er signed this off season...........a true CF'er, perhaps a veteran that can fill the spot for a few years until someone like Kelenic is ready to go (and no, I have not faith in Lagares).

  5. What sticks out to me is the overwhelming number of outfirlders with poor batting Avgs above A level.

  6. Bob, you are right, the outfield was a very large reason why the 2018 Mets' minors' offenses were sub par. Low averages and low power.

  7. Nice, Reese.......where does the time go?

  8. Does anyone know how Kelenic's name is pronounced?

  9. Kelenic and Dunn for JT Realmuto and an A Ball stud, Tom?

    Would you do this trade?

Very few lower level minor league Mets ever seem to workout as planned. Look at Wilmer Flores as a prime example. He's a nice bench guy with bad knees now.

    Hmm, maybe then...

Kelenic, Dunn, and Flores for JT Realmuto and an A Ball stud.
