Tom Brennan: PETER ALONSO'S GREAT, BIG HOLIDAY PRESENT

Tom Brennan: PETER ALONSO'S GREAT, BIG HOLIDAY PRESENT

We Mets fans have oftentimes clamored for our hot young prospect to get promoted, and often are kept wanting due to Super 2 and all that sort of mumbo jumbo.

But Peter Alonso got a few neat holiday presents recently:

1) Jay Bruce was expected to suck up ABs at first base - but he is GONE GONE GONE.

2) Wilmer Flores has played in 139 Mets games at first base - but was not tendered and so he is also GONE GONE GONE.

So the "Peter Alonso 18 Wheeler" no longer has two big obstacles to his goal of first base in Citifield for 2019.

I imagine he wakes up smiling broadly each day, especially since Brodie Van Wagenen likes him.

What's not to like, though, of a prospect who had 38 doubles, 42 homers and 146 RBIs in 159 games in 2018?

HAPPY HOLIDAYS, PETER!

  1. Morning Tom.

The Mets would be foolish not to leave Alonso in AAA for, what, 11 days, so they get another year of control?

Any businessman would say the same thing.

Nothing critical is going to happen in the first 11 days.

The Mets proved that last year.

  2. Get used to Frazier at 1st to start the year.

    1. With Alonso starting upstate, I think those 11 days are better suited to giving Smith a chance to show if he's improved. Then he can swap places with Alonso.

Of not Smith, that's a spot to give McNeil ABs, though he could get them at 3B if Frazier crosses over the diamond.

  3. Can you hear it?

That noise is The Pounder getting ready to kick the door down and take over first base for the next ten years, plus.

OK, so maybe that was a bit over the top, but I hope that Pete is the regular first baseman no later the May 1st.

  5. Mark it on your calendars, gents. April 11 (if that is in fact the day) - hopefully the Alonso era will start on the first possible date.

If Dom Smith is still with the Mets come spring training, he will be in a very crucial spring for him. He is virtually out of excuses to not play adequately...or better.

But, as Reese wrote this morning, Ollie Perez has resurrected himself after his debacle years with the Mets, so I stil have an open mind on Dom, excepy for one thing - Alonso is my first baseman.

Unless McNeil secures 3B as a starter, he will have to out-super Super Joe McEwing. He could en up playing every position but catcher and pitcher in 2019. Just get him 500+ plate appearances.
