LEXINGTON, KY – Columbia’s 18-year-old shortstop Ronny Mauricio went hitless on opening night last week at Segra Park. Since then, the Mets prospect has recorded a hit in seven straight games. He did so in the first inning of Saturday’s 3-1 loss to Lexington at Whitaker Bank Ballpark.
Mauricio is hitting .313 to begin the season, his first playing for a full-season minor-league club. Mauricio wasn’t the only to impress at the plate on Saturday. Brian Sharp finished with a pair of hits (including a double) and reached safely three times. The Fireflies could only muster five hits, though, and never led during the game. Columbia (3-6) must win on Sunday to stave off what would be the first ever four-game series road sweep.
Lexington (6-3) took a 3-0 lead against starter Christian James (L, 0-2) with runs in the fourth and fifth innings. James didn’t have a rough outing by any means, the 20-year-old righty allowed just the three runs over five innings and struck out five.
On the other side, Tyler Gray (W, 1-0) and Jonathan Bowlan (S, 1) combined for the win and save respectively for the Legends.

The series finale between the Fireflies and Legends is scheduled for 2:05 ET on Sunday from Whitaker Bank Ballpark. Right-handerDedniel Nunez (1-0, 3.18) is the expected starter for Columbia and will face lefty Austin Cox (0-1, 1.80) for Lexington.
