Tom Brennan - UGLY METS PITCHING - IT HAPPENS

Mets lose in Philly 14-3...it happens.  Infrequently, that's true.

Steve Matz have up 8 runs without recording an out, which classifies as "horrible", unless you prefer "brutal"...it happens.

Drew Gagnon had his good and bad moments in attempting to staunch the lethal Philly assault...it happens.

Team ERA - 5.65 (27th) - and in spring training, 5.38 (24th) - it happens?

No, not really.  This is 1962 stuff, pitching-wise.

But it was more than just UGLY pitching:

Several errors made the Mets look like Keystone Kops...it happens.

Matz to me is a mystery man...when are we going to see the Matz who, as I recall, started his career 10-1? Was that just a flash in the pan? Or is a dominating Matz to show up again soon?  Or ever? I hope it happens.

Boy, the last starts of Jake deGrom, Thor, and Matz are the combined worst I have seen from them - I hope it never happens again.

Non-pitcher and red hot, Brandon Nimmo gets pulled in the first inning with a stiff neck...it happens. Hopefully, it will be short-lived...but on this team, that rarely happens.

But for this team, injuries and lousy pitching have happened far too much in 2018, and more pertinently, in 2019, the season in which we find ourselves living.

I wonder if Mickey C should have pinch hit for Gagnon when it was still early enough in the game?  Did you?

Gagnon's GIDP snuffed out a first and third, one out situation that sometimes, in games like this, turn high scoring games around. I guess Callaway prioritized saving the pen over attempting to win this particular long shot game at that point.  Losses do happen.  Suck it up, and move on, am I right?

The Phillies, to not overlook the obvious, clearly have a potent, dangerous offense.  The bad pitching had at least some explanation - a lethal offensive opponent.

But that is now, what, several games where the Mets have allowed more than 10 runs over the last 10 days?

That never happens.  Not in Metsville.  Until 2019.

A few bright notes:

Jeff McNeil after a few hits got his average briefly as high as .426...freaky high...doesn't happen often. At all.

Paul Sewald was strong in relief, but his 0-13 career record (did someone say OH AND THIRTEEN?) makes me leery of trusting him.  Does the same gnawing doubt happen to you?

Wilson Ramos hit his maiden Mets homer....may it frequently happen. It might if he'd stop hitting so many line drives!  (I'm kidding, keep up the liners).

I happen to be finished now.  Have a great day. Including a series-winning Zach Wheeler win today.

If that happens, it would be swell.

If it doesn't happen, it doesn't happen.

That's baseball, folks.

  1. Counterpoint to my ugly pitching argument - the opposition has really been hitting EVERYONE:

14 of the 17 Mets games so far have been with the Nats (6), Braves (4), Twins (2), and Phils (2).

Those 4 teams are averaging an insane 5.65 runs per game, which just happens to be the Mets' ERA.

Just 3 games with the lowly Marlins, who are averaging 2.66 RPG.

San Diego, Colorado, Cincy, Pittsburgh and the Jints are all (besides the Marlins) scoring poorly - the Mets will have to beat up on those teams when they get to them. Maybe if the Mets had started with 14 games against them, and only 3 say against the Nats, the Mets' ERA would have been 3.75 at this point.

And, for what it is worth, the Mets only trail LAD in scoring in the NL.

Word on the street is that Mets top 10 prospect pitcher Thomas Szapucki should see a return back to the Fireflies squad soon. The hard throwing lefty is coming back from TJS and it will make sense all season for the organization to be careful and cautious with him.

  4. That was UGLY last night!

Without exaggeration, I could have accomplished what Matz did......after all, I have wicked 61 mph heater and decent control!

Kidding aside, I hope that was simply a bad night for Matz.

  5. I still say relax... we have the 4th best W-L record in the NL through all this...

I believe the Rhame promotion will be short lived

We are a Clemson family here.

Have followed this kid throughout his Tigers career.

Was touting him to be picked early even when most people dont respect RPs until around the 10th round.
