His path to draft day was not the usual one. As an All-Catholic pick and
Bonner’s team MVP in 2015, he started college as an infielder, spending two
years at Cumberland County College in New Jersey.
As a sophomore, his live arm
made him a candidate to be converted to a pitcher, something he’d done plenty
at Bonner but not necessarily where he projected at the college level.
“It
was easy because I always pitched my entire life,” Goggin said. “I knew what I
was getting into. I never really threw hard in high school, and I got bigger
and stronger with weight training at JMU. That really helped, and I just kept
throwing harder and my stuff got better.”
Goggin’s
numbers at James Madison indicate a project, albeit one with upside. In 19
appearances in 2019, the 6-2, 215-pounder went 0-2 with a 6.20 ERA, 1.49 WHIP
and .287 batting average against. He allowed 29 hits but walked only seven
against 27 strikeouts in 24.2 innings.
As
a junior, he went 5-3 over 18 appearances (five starts) with a 5.36 ERA and
1.55 WHIP, striking out 38 and walking 18 against 44 hits in 40.1 innings
pitched. He’s got a four-pitch arsenal – slider, curveball, changeup and a
fastball that tops out at 95.
