OPEN THREAD - Should the Mets Replace Aaron Altherr, and With Whom?

Aaron Altherr seems to have forgotten how to hit altogether.  He is an extraordinarily inept 4 for 54 this season, with 23 Ks.

Playoff teams and 4 for 54 hitters usually don't go hand-in-hand.

Considering Juan Lagares is also a Mets reserve outfielder and is hitting just .180 in 167 at bats (OK, OK, right on cue, Lagares goes 4 for 4 last night to surge to .199, but that still is sub-Mendoza, so I am not pulling this post!), these two fellas represent a huge void in the reserve outfield offensive contingent.

Playoff bids, of course, can be lost in any number of ways, one being a crap bench.

So:

How to fix this (or not, if you, the GM, feel these guys will just snap out of it).

Three AAA suggestions:

Arismendy Alcantara is hitting .303/.364/.528 in 72 AAA games, with speed and solid outfield play.  He has over 400 major league at bats and has a paltry career .189 average, with his last, somewhat extended, trial being in 2017.  Remember that JD Davis did not do well in his early trials, either.

Or:

Dilson Herrera - 22 homers, .249, but very little outfield exposure.

Or:

Rajai Davis who was hitting almost .290, but then missed almost a month, and is 3 for 17 since returning.

Or a fourth option:

Someone else?

What say you?

  1. When the bar is set this low almost anyone is an upgrade but it just puzzles me a change hasn't come yet. We would be better served having one of our pitchers hit I mean .074 really???? where are you Eric Campbell. If hitting below .200 is the Mendosa line what is hitting below .100 called besides real crappy.

  2. How about Mike Trout? Realistically Davis is the best option of the three. He has considerable major league experience, is still fast as an impala, and an adjustment period after a DL is not unusual.

  3. Also it was VERY disappointing last night with both the lackluster loss and Jeff's injury and you could almost feel the electricity of the past few weeks get sucked out of our team last night. I just hope this isn't the start of a real bad stretch coming up.

  4. Alcantara has both OF and IF experience. With McNeil uncertain and Frazier being Frazier, it can't hurt to have that versatility.

  5. I am good with Davis or Alcantara - I am NOT good with Altherr. He must GO!

Lagares obviously started his contract drive last night LOL
