Before we get to the overachievers, we need to first address the underachievers...the Mets, losers of 3 straight.
Unlike the Yanks, who annihilate Baltimore seemingly every day, the Mets face very good teams now, and have lost 3 straight. Last night, the absence of Super Squirrel hurt, as did Mickey’s decision to pull the brilliant Steve Matz too early and Ruben Tejada remaining hitless as a Met for the past few years.
When you lose like crazy for 3 months, every game thereafter feels like a must-win, and 3 straight losses hurt like crazy. That’s baseball. The market dropped 800 points yesterday - that hurt worse.
Now back to our regularly scheduled program, the Overachievers.
The Brooklyn Cyclones have often been associated with lackluster hitting and very solid pitching.

But some this year are, for lack of a better word, OVERACHIEVERS.
This season, thru Tuesday, who are exemplary hitters (defined as good average, OPS, and/or good power numbers) and ace pitchers (high Ks, low ERA, LOW WHIP).
HELLACIOUS HITTERS
Wilmer Reyes has been the team’s MVP, hands down. In 43 games, the 2B has hit .346/.368/.469, with 10 of 12 in steals and just 26 Ks...good enough to jump into my Mets Top 20 prospects.
Jake Mangum was a 4th round hit machine in college. In 37 games, he is hitting .263/.344/.331 with 12 steals. Just 20 Ks, too. Surging at .361/.429/.432 in August so far. One to watch.
3B Jose Peroza is truly another to watch. JP is heating up for Brooklyn (12 for 32, 10 RBIs in his last 8 games) after scorching in 16 GCL games (.768 slug %). His full season stats as a 19 year old bopper (7 months younger than first rounder Brett Baty)? In 35 games, a whopping 35 RBI, 10 doubles, 8 HR, .295/.361/.583. Sweet indeed. And just 1 error at 3B in 25 games this year. I just moved him up to my # 11 prospect, what the heck...
SS Branden Fryman gets an "incomplete" due to injury. But in 13 pre-injury games, he was smoking at .356/.396/.400.
Not to Be Overlooked: Joltin' Joe Genord has hit just .209, but with 7 HR and 31 RBI, including a recent 6 RBI game.
HELLACIOUS HURLERS
The amazing, undrafted Jared Biddy in 18.2 IP has allowed no earned runs, 11 hits, 1 BB, while racking up 20 Ks. Yeah, baby!
Hitless Nathan Jones missed time, but 5 hitless innings with 8 Ks gets him listed right here.
Reliever Matt Mullenbach in 18 IP has A 1.50 era, and he's fanned 18 and allowed a scanty 5 hits. Wow.
Bryan Metoyer has allowed just 3 hits in his last 18.2 IP...WOW! And one hit in his last 14 IP. A 2018 40th round gem? (Update: It sure looks that way - on Tuesday night, he threw 3 innings of relief and fanned EIGHT! EIGHT!)
Garrison Bryant has been simply sensational lately. The 20 year old 36th round lefty draftee out of HS in 2016 has allowed a mere 5 earned runs in his past 7 starts spanning 41 innings, while walking just 6 and allowing just 21 hits and fanning 35.
Daison Acosta, 20, is now with Columbia, but killed it with the Clones. Overall, he has a 2.33 ERA and has fanned 57 in 49 innings this year. Go, Daison, go!
So there you have it, boys and girls.
The Cyclone’s best performers.
Good points Tom. One interesting thing is how many of the players have been playing different positions. Reyes has played first, second, SS and third. Magnum center and right. Romero has also played multiple positions. It will be interesting to see what happens with their positions over the next few years. If the tram will stress the ability to play multiple positions or have them focus on one.
ReplyDeleteI moved Biddy to an early BLUE rating after last night's game.
ReplyDeleteJohn great point.
ReplyDeleteMack, Biddy deserves BLUE, but what the heck is going on with Metoyer? He has had some lethal pitching stretch with the Cyclones, in tersm of almost no hits allowed AND the 8 Ks in 3 innings the other night. That must've been something to see.
It would be nice to have our own Acunas and Guerreros and Bichettes.
ReplyDeleteWe have our own Guerrero, although I know that's not where you were going with that, at all!
ReplyDeleteI'm not surprised about how well the minor league pitchers are performing, the Mets have good scouts & coaches throughout the system.
