Some to consider...

Ron Hunt... Wally Backman... Felix Millan...

Edgardo Alfonzo...   Doug Flynn...   Daniel Murphy...

  1. Felix Millan was an instant favorite as soon as he came to the Mets. He had tremendous range at 2nd and would slide into right field to rob base hits and throw runners out at first.

  2. Also liked Lute Barnes. Saw him hit a double driving in a run and then scoring himself in the first inning of a 2-1 Tom Seaver win over the Braves.

  3. My favorite was Sicilian Mafia man "The Animal" Al Fonso

  4. Hunt...I remember him more for his 50 HBP in a single season.

  5. I'm a small ball kind of guy and Wally Backman made contact, stole bases and could field his position. We also later learned what type of personality (or disorder) he had.

  6. Ron Hunt was the 1st Met voted in as All Star starter in 1964. he beat out Pete Rose that year, who had beaten Ron out as rookie-of-the-year in 1963. the golden age of anything is when the speaker was a kid, so I'm a little prejudiced having been 15 then, but it was a proud moment to have our 1st real all star.

  7. Jon, I agree with you on Ron Hunt - felt the same way back then.

Man, he had some cool stats...382 career strikeouts vs. 555 walks and 243 HBP. Never fanned more than 47 times. Fanned 30 times or less in a season 7 times. I do not recall why he was done at 33. He had a good season that last year, and then retired.

Sixteen total homers his first 2 seasons, Just 23 HRs over the next 10 seasons.

Led NL in HBP 7 seasons.

  9. Nailed it Anonymous...Jordany was great. 5 pinch hit homers in one season. One Mets' record that may never be broken!

  10. Ron Hunt, he was difficult to strike out.
