Alex Rodriguez
and his fiancé Jennifer Lopez are looking into the
possibility of buying the Mets. Rodriguez confirmed reports that he might be
interested in buying the team back in March, stating as a guest on The Tonight
Show that “If the opportunity came up, I would certainly look at it” A-Rod loves New York City, he grew up a Mets
fan and 1986 was one of his best years of his life.
The news of A-Rod’s interest first came in
February after the proposed sale of the Mets to
Steve Cohen, in which he agreed to purchase eighty percent of the team for 2.6
billion, unfortunately fell through.
The problem was that Cohen grew concerned about the terms at that time, which was not having control over the direction of the franchise. If you’re going to invest that much money into a team you would expect team control over the direction.

Unlike the previous terms with Cohen, the new owner would
have full control of the team once a sale is complete. The Wilpons can’t say
much due to confidentiality and non-disclosure agreements. They just want to
focus on the future and not in the past. They hope to find another potential
buyer soon.
If A-Rod is able to
purchase the team, I think he may turn to free agency to sign a few big-name
players to improve the team due to being around the Yankees for years and
winning the World Series in 2009. That would please Met fans immediately, which
is what the Mets have not been doing that much of in recent years.
A-Rod has attended high-profile investment conferences and has started his own investment firm, A-Rod Corp. He
found success as a businessman recently. He has invested in real estate deals
and tech startups. Other than A-Rod and J-Lo recently, no other known
candidates have shown any interest in buying the Mets.
If there is a baseball season and when the designated hitter
is implemented in a realigned Grapefruit League that would include both American
and National League teams, the most likely candidate for DH duty for the Mets
would be Yoenis Cespedes as he continues his recovery from ankle and heal surgeries. He
will not be able to handle a regular work load in the outfield. The other
options are Adams and Smith. Perhaps Cano would also see some DH duty.
Even cheaters like A-Rod and past-her-prime singers like J-Lo would likely be an improvement over the Wilpons. Perhaps they're thinking in the uncertainty of the times they can swoop in at a lower price than the Mets were expecting to get.
ReplyDeleteWoke up to closed borders and this...
ReplyDeleteI will have a few comments about this in my new Sunday morning post... The Sunday Edition
Obviously, A Rod knows baseball. Could be a good thing.
ReplyDeleteA-Rod does knows baseball very well and he won with the Yankees. If he is the owner I think he will spend some money on free agents.
ReplyDeleteIs A-Rod anticipating the Yankees going along with this.
ReplyDeleteAnd... there is no truth to the rumors that the coaches would be renamed The Fly Boys
ReplyDeleteNot sure it will be A-Rod. With the sport currently dead and zero interest in baseball due to the virus, A-Rod is just trying to get his name in the paper. What happened to his instagram show?
ReplyDeleteMets are going along with it to try to get some free publicity that they are for sale.
Not a sellers market right now. and I don't see the Wilpons lowering their asking price.
