Good Morning. Happy Birthday to Mark
Carreon, Preston Wilson,
and David Segui,
the Mets lost to the Yankees 9-3 as baseball came back to NY and Bill Madden
says A-Rod and J-LO don’t have the cash to get Mets.

Porcello,5 innings, 6 hits, 3 runs including a two-run homer to Clint
Frazier. In a nutshell – I thought
the Mets defensive deficiencies were highlighted and the highlight of the game
was Tomas
Nido throwing out Gleyber Torres trying to steal a base in the first. They
are back at it tonight with Corey
Oswalt on the mound for the Mets.

Metstradamus:
That was weird. “So the Mets lead off the two game exhibition season with a
9-3 loss. The second game of the home and home against the Yankees is tomorrow
night. Hopefully, some other players can take a rest without everybody trying
to guess as to whether they have COVID-19 or not. Because that’s going to get
old fast.”
Mike
Vaccaro NY Post: This game wasn’t normal, and that was a good thing for Mets.
The Mets got good and hammered Saturday night at Citi Field, the Yankees
handing them a 9-3 loss thanks in large part to a ninth inning that looked an
awful lot like the fever dreams that haunted their fans most of last year…Only
a funny thing happened...Nobody booed.”
NY
Post: Mets’ Pete Alonso brings ‘relentless attitude’ in first game back. “This
is one of the days we were wishing and waiting for during the second
offseason,’’ Pete Alonso
said before going 2-for-4 with an RBI in a 9-3 loss to the Yankees in the first
exhibition game for both teams.

Bill
Madden NY Daily News: Alex Rodriguez, Jennifer Lopez simply don’t have the cash
to buy and then run the Mets. “The last thing you want at this stage of the
game is more investors. It just proves the point they don’t have the money,
whereas a guy like Cohen [whose net worth is estimated at $13.8 billion by
Forbes] doesn’t need any investors. Nor do the 76ers guys [Harris is said to
have a net worth of nearly $5 billion and Blitzer $1.3 billion]. They can all
buy the Mets on their own.”
Rising
Apple: Mets outfielder Jake
Marisnick should be the right upgrade over Juan
Lagares.
“No offensive player was more important to the @Mets in their first dozen years than Cleon Jones. When he left he led the franchise in XBH, hits, RBI, runs, singles, TB and HRs; 2nd in AB, AVG, 2B, 3B, HBP and SF; 3rd in OPS and SB; 4th in OBP, SLG% and BB.” - @SABRbioproject pic.twitter.com/JE5JYtbqYu— Mets Rewind (@metsrewind) July 19, 2020

AP News: Brothers in arms; Indians show support for social justice. “While a prerecorded version of “The Star-Spangled Banner” blared over
the speakers at the spectator-free ballpark, the Indians stood side-by-side,
their right hand over their heart, their left hand on their teammate’s right
shoulder…’I think as a team we stand by the change but we also respect the flag
and the national anthem as a team,’ Francisco Lindor
said after hitting a go-ahead double in the eighth inning of a 5-3 victory. ‘We
understand that it is time for a change and change is due.’”

Today: Colorado Rockies admit defeat in $106 million bullpen disaster.
After the 2017 season “Colorado went for a full makeover, committing three-year
deals to relievers Wade Davis ($52 million), Bryan Shaw ($27 million) and Jake
McGee (re-signed for $27 million)… With a season still left on those deals, the
Rockies cut their losses, releasing Shaw and McGee a week before the start of
the 2020 campaign…In total, the Rockies committed $106 million to the three
relievers who combined for a 5.69 ERA in 327⅓ innings in 2018 and 2019.”

Blast from the Past: Mets Minor League Report – July 19, 2012: A-Low –
Brooklyn: Tonight – W, 7-3 My BFF, Toby Hyde, has become especially excitied
about what CF Brandon
Nimmo has been doing lately. Nimmo has hit .324 in the past 10 games going
into tonight. That’s pretty good for anyone boen in 1993. Tonight, he doubled
in two in the 9th, aall also came all away around on the same play due to a
throwing error. That’s a two-base gain on one throw. Only really fast people do
this.

1963 - With one out and a man on in the 9th, Roy Sievers hits his 300th career home run to give the Phils a 2 - 1 win over the Mets. Roger Craig is the victim, his 13th straight loss.
1976 - The Mets' Dave Kingman tears ligaments in his thumb diving for a

1986 - Mets players Ron Darling, Tim Teufel, Bob Ojeda and Rick
Aguilera are arrested
following an early-morning fight with off-duty police officers working as
security guards outside a Houston bar, but are all released in time for their
game against the Astros that evening. On January 26, 1987, Darling and Teufel will be fined $200 while charges against Ojeda and
Aguilera will be dropped.
2015: The Mets strand 25 baserunners
but manage to defeat the Cardinals, 3 - 1,
in 18 innings. Ruben Tejada drives
in the winning run with a sacrifice fly and Eric Campbell follows
with a successful squeeze bunt as
the Mets go 1-for-26 with runners in scoring position.
Starter Carlos Martinez is
pressed into service for the Cards and takes the loss, pitching 4 innings. The
game is scoreless for 12 innings, until Kevin Plawecki drives
in a run for the Mets in the 13th, but Kolten Wong replies
with a solo homer.

Porcello seemed sharp except for hanging one.
ReplyDeleteMark Carreons birthdayon the day baseballgets to Carry On.
Edwin Diaz post was annoying as the last two minutes were untranslated Spanish.
COVID is way down locally (1 o2 deaths on all of Long Island, if any, in the past week. But can’t blame Toronto, and Freeman got quite as are.

ReplyDeleteThought you take Sunday's off?
Tom - Thought Porcello was victimized by poor defense in the first which led to a run, Familia by poor defense which led to a run and Poor defense in the ninth that eventually led to 5 more runs. Cano should not be in the field, Moroff should not be on the team, Nido needs to be the everyday catcher. Nimmo is not a CF. McNeil is the best 3B on team. Guillorme needs to be the everyday 2B. Not sold on Marisnick in CF but Cordell needs to get a shot based on catch last night and catches he made in Spring training. Fargas deserves a shot as well.
ReplyDeleteMack - Sunday's off was only during COVID suspension. Now that Baseball is back, thought that was over? I gotta go read that memo again or did you post the note in the company cafeteria? By the way the cafeteria menu has lately not been up to par. Tuna Fish, again? What's up with that?
