Daily Mets Minors Report – 7-19-12

Date: 7-19-12

MLB - Mets:
The Mets go into tonight’s game having given up 158-runs from the 7th inning and after… by far, the most in baseball.

AAA – Buffalo:
RHP Jeurys Familia takes the mound tonight for a league-leading 20th start. Familia is coming off back-to-back quality starts. In those two wins, the righty has allowed 10 hits, one earned run, two walks and 11 strikeouts in 12.1 innings of work. Familia also delivered a quality start the last time he faced the Mud Hens, On June 1 in Toledo, Familia allowed just three runs on six hits in six innings, but fell in defeat.
Turned out that this was possibly Familia’s best outing of the season. Went eight innings, gave up one run, had nine strikeouts, and threw over 100 pitches. That’s a big day for me!

AA-Binghamton:
RHP Cory Mazzoni (3-2, 3.48) makes his sixth start of the season and first against the Trenton Thunder. Mazzoni comes off a seven-inning, complete game shutout against the Erie SeaWolves on July 13. In the opener of a doubleheader, the righty allowed just four hits and struck out one to earn his second straight win. It was Mazzoni’s second complete game as a B-Met, with the first coming in his Double-A debut on June 20. Selected in the 2nd round of the 2011 draft out of North Carolina State, Mazzoni started the season with the St. Lucie Mets (High-A), going 5-1 with a 3.25 ERA in 12 starts in the Florida State League.
LHP Vidal Nuno (4-2, 1.57) makes his eleventh start of the year with the Thunder and first against the B-Mets. Nuno took the loss in his last start against the New Britain Rock Cats on July 13, ending a four-game winning streak. He allowed three runs on eight hits and struck out four over 5.2 innings. Nuno pitched for two seasons in the Indians system after being selected in the 48th round of the 2009 draft out of Baker University (KS) by Cleveland. He started 2011 with the Washington Wild Things of the Frontier League before signing a minor league contract with the New York Yankees in June 2011.
Today – L, 1-7
Let’s make sure we understand this team. The B-Mets are not going to win the Eastern Division World Series. The team has some blue chip prospects (Zack Wheeler, Cory Mazzoni, Wilmer Flores) a borderline prospect (Jenry Marte), and a burgeoning pro-level utility player (Eric Campbell). The rest are good to great minor leaguers who give their 100% every night.
This game ended a lot worse than it looked after five innings. Mazzone had another quality start (5.0-IP, only 3-H, 2-R,  4-K, only 1-BB, 66-50). Then, the combination of Adrian Rosario and Jeff Stephens brought: 3.0-IP, 5-R.
Nine hits… 1B Alan Dykstra now up to .324.

A+ - St. Lucie: -
Tonight - Game finally started after a long rain delay. Opposing pitcher was another of the guys available when the Mets picked Brandon Nimmo, LHSP Jed Bradley.
SP Chase Hutchingson wishes the rain never stopped. Gave up five runs in the first inning.
One of the new highlights of this team is the returned onf 2B-IF Danny Muno. He had been on the 50-game suspension list for 'recreational reasons' and has now picked off where he was hitting in Brooklyn (2011 - league leading .355) and what he as produced so far this season in Lucy (.293).

A – Savannah: -
No games tonight

A-Low – Brooklyn:
Tonight – W, 7-3
My BFF, Toby Hyde, has become especially excitied about what CF Brandon Nimmo has been doing lately. Nimmo has hit .324 in the past 10 games going into tonight. That’s pretty good for anyone boen in 1993. Tonight, he doubled in two in the 9th, aall also came all away around on the same play due to a throwing error. That’s a two-base gain on one throw. Only really fast people do this.

Rookie – Kingsport:
Tonight - L, 7-10

You have to go back and remember how young the Mets drafted this year. This team should be in the GCL League.

We have to drop the ‘prospect’ tag from P Akeel Morris, who simply hasn’t shown enough to even keep around on a team this year. Today, the line was truly dismal: 2.1 IP, 5 H, 7 ER, BB, HR, 2 HBP. Morris just hasn’t panned out and he’s taking a slot away from one of this year’s draft picks. Nice kid who gave me a great interview last year, but I’d cut fish here.
