John From Albany – Mets Breakfast Links 7/25/2020

Good Morning.  Happy Birthday to Billy Wagner, Guillermo Mota, and Brooklyn Pitcher Jared Biddy.  Mets 1 Braves 0 on Opening Day, Highlights, and Mets History for 7/25/20.

Mets Links:

Mets 1 Braves 0.  Jacob deGrom: 5 shutout innings, 1 hit, 1 walk, 8 Ks; Seth Lugo: 2 innings, 1 hit, 3 Ks, Justin Wilson: 1 inning, 1 hit 2 Ks; Edwin Diaz: 1 inning, 1 walk, 2 Ks; Yoenis Céspedes HR;  Brandon Nimmo 2 hits leading off; Jeff McNeil, Robinson Cano and Amed Rosario one hit each (Box Score).

SNY.TV: The Mets and Braves face off again on Saturday at 4:10 PM. It will be battle of lefties as Steven Matz takes on Max Fried.

Mest360.com: Gut Reaction: Mets 1, Braves 0 (7/24/20). “The Mets are now 39-12 in their last 51 Opening Day games.”

John Harper SNY.TV: Why Luis Rojas' moves in managerial debut proved Mets are in very good hands. “For starters, his very first lineup did not have Robinson Cano hitting third…even more significant that the rookie manager replaced Cano at second base in the top of the eighth with rookie Andres Gimenez with the Mets protecting that one-run lead…But did you really think Rojas would have the nerve to make such a move this early? I know I didn’t. Talk about setting a tone for the season: this was a move that indicated the new manager isn’t going to let egos, reputations or anything else get in the way of winning games.”

Metstradamus: An Opener In Three Pitches. “First inning, down 2-0 to Freddie Freeman…deGrom throws a nasty slider that shaved the inside corner like Paulie used the razor to shave the garlic in prison so it could liquify in the pan.”

Mets.com: Notes: Stroman's recovery; Nimmo leads off. “Marcus Stroman said he has no physical issues throwing a baseball as he proved when he threw a 55-pitch bullpen session earlier this week. His problems are more with athletic movements around the mound…Even then, he agreed to an MRI simply to be ‘precautionary.’ When that test revealed a muscle tear, Stroman said it was ‘definitely shocking.’”

SNY.TV: Edwin Diaz shuts the door on Braves in Mets' 1-0 win: 'That’s what I’ve been looking for'. Closer struggled in 2019, but showcased electric stuff on Opening Day.

New York Mets traded
Terrence Long and Leo Vasquez to the Oakland Athletics for Kenny Rogers on July 25, 1999.

1967
The White Sox become the second major league team in history to win a doubleheader with two walk-off homers when they sweep the Indians, 3-1 and 6-5, thanks to game-ending home runs by J.C. Martin and Ken Berry. In 1962, the Mets were the first team to accomplish the feat, with Hobie Landrith and Gil Hodges going deep, respectively, in the bottom of the ninth inning of each game to give the team its first twin bill sweep in franchise history.
1978
Pete Rose's third inning Shea Stadium single to left off Mets righty Craig Swan establishes a National League record for hits in consecutive games. The Reds infielder has hit safely in 38 games, breaking Tommy Holmes' mark set as a member of the Boston Braves in 1945.

1990
After having a commanding 9-0 lead, and still ahead 10-3 entering the bottom of the ninth inning, the Mets barely hold on to beat the Phillies at Veterans Stadium, 10-9. The nail biter causes the usually even mannered Bob Murphy to use a mild obscenity in his call of the final out, "they win the damn thing by a score of 10 to 9!"

1994
Rico Brogna, who was recalled from the Norfolk Tides five days ago where he was hitting .351, becomes the third Mets rookie to get five hits in a game, joining Dick Smith (1964) and John Milner (1972). The 24 year-old slick-fielding first baseman collects three singles and two doubles in five at-bats during New York's 7-2 victory over St. Louis at Busch Stadium.

1978: The Reds lose to the Mets, 9 - 2, but Pete Rose collects three hits to break Tommy Holmes' record for the longest hitting streak in National League annals. Holmes is in attendance at Shea Stadium and shakes Rose's hand after his 3rd-inning single off Craig Swan.

2001: The Mets leave a club-record 16 runners on base, but still beat the Marlins, 5 - 2, pinning the loss on Ryan DempsterGlendon Rusch is the winner. Lenny Harris ties Smoky Burgess for 2nd place on the all-time pinch hit list when he doubles.

  1. In a good sign that the dude still got it, low ball hitter Cespedes whacked his HR against a hot FB in the top of the zone...a long way. The dugout celebration included zero social distancing. careful - we need you guys.

Jake looked - well - better than Seaver for his 5 innings. 15 Ks from the pitchers? Hot dog!

Look like JD Davis get robbed of a HR by the left center crevice, but I won't go back to my complaints on that issue of fences.

Gimenez debut. And Cano got....a hit?? Nimmo got two?? Come on!

And everyone stood for the anthem?? Whoa!
