John From Albany – Mets Breakfast Links 8/2/2020

Good Morning.  Braves 7 Mets 1 as Michael Wacha has a tough outing but Robinson Cano stays hot with the bat. Happy Birthday Dae-Sung Koo and Brooklyn Cyclones OF Ranfy Adon

Mets Links:

Braves 7 Mets 1. Michael Wacha (L,1-1) 4 innings, 7 hits, 1 HR, 5 runs, 5 earned runs, 2 walks, 4 Ks;  Franklyn Kilome 4 innings, 2 hits, 1 HR, 2 runs, 2 earned runs, 0 walks, 5 Ks; Robinson Cano 2 for 3, 1 RBI – now hitting .393 on the year; Michael Conforto 2 for 4, 2 Ks;    Brandon Nimmo 0 for 2, 2 walks, 1 HBP, 1 run scored, 1 K; Jeff McNeil 1 for 3, 2 walks; Dominic Smith 0 for 2, 1 walk, 1 HBP, 2 Ks (Box Score).

SNY.TV:  The Mets and Braves continue their four-game set at Truist Park on Sunday at 1:10 PM on SNY. Rookie David Peterson will face Braves righty Kyle Wright.

NY Post: Mets pounded by Braves in lackluster, sloppy performance. “The Mets sure resembled a team Saturday that had their hearts ripped out and shown to them the previous night. Zombies was more like it, as manager Luis Rojas’ crew fell into an early hole and never bothered to muster much of a fight…”

Metstradamus: “The Mets’ 7-1 loss on Saturday is the second time this season where the Mets followed up with a gut punch loss with a performance that’s completely flat. But to be fair, momentum is that night’s starting pitcher. The last time the Mets were flat, Rick Porcello was a disaster. Tonight it was Michael Wacha”

Newsday: “Wacha was ineffective. He needed 97 pitches to grind through four innings in which he allowed five runs, seven hits and two walks (to five strikeouts). All of those runs scored with two outs.”

Brian Joura Mets360: “Franklyn Kilome made his MLB debut in relief of Wacha. He also threw four innings, keeping the rest of the beleaguered pen from having to trudge out there again and get beat around. Kilome was consistently in the mid 90s and fanned five without giving up a walk. But he allowed two runs, including a solo homer.”

SNY.TV: Mets Takeaways from Saturday's 7-1 loss to Braves, including a down start from Michael Wacha. “The Mets had a chance to get back in the game in the fourth inning, as they loaded the bases with one out off Braves starter Touki Toussaint. But Wilson Ramos went down on strikes and Amed Rosario grounded out to third to kill the threat and leave the bases loaded. Toussaint went just four innings, but he held the Mets scoreless and struck out five hitters.”

NY Post: Pete Alonso, Yoenis Cespedes can’t get untracked for Mets. “Alonso went 1-for-5 with two strikeouts, and stranded six runners, as his batting average dropped to .200…Following Saturday’s 0-for-4 effort with two strikeouts — leaving five men on base — Cespedes now holds a team-worst .161 batting average while hitting 1-for-13 on the road.”

Mike’s Mets: Bullpen Follies.  “When the Mets blew that game last night [Friday] I honestly wondered if their season was already cooked. It feels somewhat apocalyptic to have lost games in the manner that the Mets have done so far, but once I got over my frustration I knew that it's still too early to run up the white flag now.”

MLB Links:

Rockies 6 Padres 1 (Box Score).

A’s 3 Mariners 2 (Box Score).

NY Post: Rob Manfred’s defiant MLB message: ‘We are playing’. “We are playing. The players need to be better, but I am not a quitter in general and there is no reason to quit now,” Manfred told Karl Ravech of ESPN. “We have had to be fluid, but it is manageable.”

Joel Sherman NY Post: MLB at a crossroads seeking answers to coronavirus questions. “MLB is a guinea pig, a crash test dummy. The league is trying to learn in real time how to play a regular season in a pandemic, which falls into the category of trying to learn to swim while surrounded by great white sharks.”

Asian Baseball:

Today, Chunichi and the Yakult Swallows played to a 0-0 tie Nori Aoki 2 for 4 (Box Score).

Doosan Bears 12 NC Dinos 10 Aaron Altherr 2 for 3, run scored, RBI (Box Score).

Aaron Altherr has the day off today (Box Score).

Tough start today for Drew Gagnon 4.1 innings, 7 hits, 5 earned runs, 4 walks, 3 Ks (Box Score).

  2. As both luis and Diaz have said, rest=rust, and he needs more work to be sharp. In the 2 Braves games, we led by 4 in the 8th and trailed by 5 in the 8th. Those would seem to be the spots to use him. How else to give him needed work?

As for the guy who DID pitch Friday, Betances admitted he needs to build arm strength to raise his FB from 93 to 98 mph. Maybe it's time for him to head to Brooklyn until that is achieved.

The "old men" seem headed in opposite directions, with Cano red-hot and running well and Yo looking like a rusty gate.

All in all, the season so far has a ST look, with SPs on limited pitch counts and players with no experience beyond AA seeing action. Even those with limited (and ineffective) ML time, like Sewald , Oswalt, et al, are getting "last chance" looks as we wait for the IL ones to return.

    Strange atmosphere.

  4. Anything can happen, but the numbers game is against him. The pen is crowdwd as is, the roster will shrink soon, and Brach, Hughes, Gsellman and Stroman are due back soon.

  5. Correction : Hughes IS back, activated today. Kilome sent to the Brooklyn site.
