Brian Joura Mets360:
“It was bizarro night, as the Mets came through with runners on base, while the
Braves couldn’t buy a hit with runners in scoring position. Combined with
excellent starting pitching by David Peterson, the Mets emerged with a 7-2 win
over the Braves on Saturday night.”

“David Peterson tossed an absolute gem. He kept the Braves at zero until Adam
Duvall hit a solo home run with two outs in the sixth inning. But that was his
only blemish, as he allowed just one run on three hits while walking four and
striking out a career-high 10 batters.”

Justin Wilson arrived to save Peterson’s win, Castro’s ERA and the Mets’

Luckily, he hit it right to Robbie.”

Mets put the game away with a four-run eighth. Dominic Smith led off with his

It’s never popular to compliment Robinson Canó, but he is having one hell of a season with the #Mets this year. He’s hitting .331 with a .943 OPS. His swing looks as good as it has ever been. Great bounce back year for him.

conceivably a very hot and extremely lucky week from making the playoffs as the
8-seed. Given the right quantities of heat and luck, we might waft up to the
5-seed, but chances are the 8-seed is as high as we can set our sights, if we
are of a mind to set them at all.”
Metstradamus:
You’re not sucking me back in. This game was the very definition of too
little too late as they used an 8th inning rally to put the Atlanta Braves away

footnote instead of the last in a long line of nightmares.

1966 |
The Mets' 3-0 victory over Houston, their 63rd win,
assures the team will lose less than a hundred games in a season for the
first time in the five-year history of the franchise. The Amazins', who will
finish the campaign in ninth place with a 66-95 record, averaged 113 losses a
season during their first four years in the National League. |
1969 |
Bob Moose, giving the Pirates their third win in two days
against the eventual world champs, no-hits the first-place Mets at Shea Stadium,
4-0. The 21 year-old right-hander will compile a 14-3 record with a 2.91 ERA
for the third-place Bucs this season. |
1973 |
The Pirates miss scoring in the top of the 13th inning
when Dave Augustine's 'home run' bounces off the top of the fence into the
glove of left fielder Cleon Jones, who relays the ball to Wayne Garrett in
time for the third baseman to nail Richie Zisk at the plate. In the bottom of
the frame, Mets rookie catcher Ron Hodges ends the Shea Stadium contest,
which will become known as the 'Ball on the Wall Game,' with a one-out single
off Bucs' reliever Dave Giusti, plating John Milner for the 4-3 victory. |
1973 |
After sharing the news on the Today Show, Willie
Mays officially announces his retirement at a press conference held at Shea
Stadium's Diamond Club. In five days, the Mets will honor the aging superstar
with pre-game ceremony night at the ballpark. |
2019 |
In the Mets’ 8-1 victory at Great American Ball Park, Pete
Alonso goes deep in the eighth inning against Reds’ reliever Sal Romano for
his major-league-leading 50th home run. The 24 year-old right-handed slugging
first baseman, who is two homers shy of Yankees Aaron Judge’s 2017 rookie
record, is the first player to hit 50 round-trippers during the season of his
major league debut. |

Peterson was impressive.
ReplyDeleteSmith was impressive.
The Healthy 2020 Cano was, and has been, very impressive.
Last year's Cano swoon was injuries. He hit .440 in the spring, homered off Scherzer, but those two hand injuries screwed his 2019. What he is doing in 2020 he could have done in 2019. Had he, the Kelenic trade would actually look GOOD.
Pete? Depressive. I tried to see if he leads MLB in LOBs, but had no idea where to find that number. The Mets as a team do lead in LOB.
If Pete wakes up in this final week, the Mets have a chance.
Kyle Wright has sucked. Will the Mets get to him today? They better.
Did not follow the game last night, but was thrilled to read what Peterson did.
ReplyDeleteI see he, Jake, and Syndergaard as the beginnings of a very good 2021 rotation.
Add an outsider like Trevor Bauer or Taijon Walker, or an insider like Marcus Stroman and it could be a bounceback season for the rotation.
It is amazing how David Peterson struggled in AA last year - Anthony Kay excelled - and has not been able to yet get on track for the Blue Jays. Kevin Smith excelled in AA too but was traded away. Would have like to have seen him in action with the Mets this year.
ReplyDeleteIt was great to see Peterson take down Freddie the way he did! What a great game last night. Love the Peterson potential.
ReplyDeleteWhat has happened to Matz? How did he go from being a potential ace and at least a productive player to not being able to pitch anymore? Does he need to talk to a different pitching coach? Is he hurt?
Dallas - I think yes to all of the questions you raise above. Keith brought up great points Friday night. Said that Matz has gotten away from pitching inside to righties. He said that was a big part of his success last year. This actually could be a decision that coaches and Matz made due to the large numbers of HRs he has given up this year and the last two years, but HRs or not, he sure was better the last two years under Eiland and Callaway. Wonder if the Angels will try and get him on the cheap.
ReplyDeleteDallas
ReplyDeleteMatz' head is broken.
Needs a new home.
