                                                    Mack - Weekly Draft Notes

A couple of thoughts on this upcoming draft.

I have said in the past that this would be a very deep, talent wise, draft due to the logjam caused by the Corona mess.

I am now starting to realize that it is even going to be more talented than that.

This will be a supernova draft. A draft with a huge amount of talent piled on top of another huge amount of talent.

We could see major, major league players coming out of this draft easily into the 6th round.

I mean it.

New York Yankees  - @Yankees

The Yankees mourn the loss of Mark Newman, who spent 26 years in the Yankees organization, 15 of which were at the forefront of the Yankees Minor League system. Much of his leadership cultivated the talent that has helped the Yankees be successful for decades.  LINK

Kendall Rogers  - @KendallRogers

SCOOP: The NCAA is allowing college baseball programs to use two days of intrasquad scrimmages the same way they would operate two fall scrimmages against other teams — no time limit. Currently, you can only scrimmages for four hours. No limit for two days

Bob Nightengale - @BNightengale

Another awful day in the MLB scouting world: The Atlanta Braves, who are in 1st place in the NL East, have informed several of their top veteran pro scouts today that they've been laid off, less than two weeks before the postseason.

Sweeping layoffs are across the board, including player development and business operations, besides the pro and amateur scouting departments

Prospect Live Podcast - Joe Doyle (@JoeDoyleMiLB) speaks with Canes Baseball Head Coach Jeff Petty, an esteemed leader of men. He's helped talented kids such as MacKenzie Gore, Beau Burrows, Matt Manning, and Corbin Carroll get selected in the first round of MLB Drafts. The 2021 class might be his most talented group ever.

Patrick Ebert  -  @PatrickEbert44

RHP Glenn Albanese (Louisville) is a big sleeper for spring season and draft, saw him in July, was 92-93/94 with big breaker – today word has it he was 95-97/98 with major spin in brief outing as a starter  Video

2020 stat line:  5-G, 0-ST, 0-0, 2.08, 1.22, 8.2-IP, 18-K

‘21 SS Max Johnson (OH) with an RBI knock up the middle here. Smooth stroke from both sides with advanced athleticism and middle infield defense. LINK

Grant Cherry (‘21 Tenn.) with a fast arm stroke here generating easy velo. FB 89-92/3 with cut. Quick SL showing sweep in upper-70’s. Challenging hitters with the FB early. Big power arm potential.  LINK

‘21 RHP Brennan McCune (OH) with a great showing in his first PG event. Physical build, FB up to 93 mph with real carry through the zone, missing bats with velo, showed solid CH as well. Toledo commit. LINK

Jacob Walsh (2021 NV) up to 89 mph with good feel for this breaking ball. Big physical LHH with some two-way upside. LINK

South Alabama commit Justin Barry-Smith (2021, The Woodlands, Texas) is sitting 89-91 mph with the fastball while showing a break ball in the low 80s during playoff action for Texas Twelve Black 2021.  LINK

PBR Wisconsin  -   (@PBRWisconsin)

Top-ranked arm in Wisconsin's '21 class, RHP Vincent Trapani  is carving at 91-94 mph, arm-side run late. CB has sharpened as he's gone on, 75-78 mph, 11/5 with some bite. No hits and 4Ks and he's done after three.  LINK

Shooter Hunt  -  @ShooterHunt

It’s been nothing but barrel after barrel for ‘21 C Hunter Dobbins (IN) all weekend with hit after hit. Has a physical 6’2” 195 frame w/ barrel chest & has driven the ball to both gaps. LINK

Perfect Game Four Corners  -  @PG_FourCorners

Patrick Steitz (2021, AZ) K’d 8 through 4 IP. Fastball up to 90 mph, a ton of projectable length down the mound. LINK

Joe  -  @JoeDoyleMiLB

SS Marcelo Mayer is one of the more professional hitters in the 2021 class. Has shown innate ability to go the other way w/most pitches, so much so he's been focusing on hammering the ball pull-side. Big strength. Textbook stroke here. Top 10 guy for me. LINK

RHP Tomoyuki Sugano is one of the best pitchers in NPB and he might be on the verge of signing with an MLB team in the near future. Here’s what you need to know about him as written by our NPB expert @tom_mussa.  LINK

Tyler Russo  -  @TRussoPG

Just a brief start here for Brock Selvidge as he worked an easy outing up to 93 and landed the SL/CH combo. Velo came on in a big way this summer and should still trend up as we head through the next 9-10 months. #54 on the ‘21 PG Draft Top 300.

Perfect Game Scout - @PG_Scouting

Brock Selvidge (AZ) was up to 93 here in a brief look with good life down in the zone; plenty of strikes with CH/SL as well.

Tyler Jennings - @TylerJennings24

Malakhi Knight (Marysville, WA): Big riser this summer. Ryan Braun-esque swing, very athletic body, power is coming. Long term future in center field. Recently transferred to Archbishop Murphy. Video

Brian Sakowski - @B_Sakowski_PG  - Big, big fan of Knight. Think he could absolutely be in the first round conversation next summer. Great vid by Tyler.

PBR Arizona - @PBRArizona

2021 C Cole Sheehan - Uncommitted, large defined body, above avg athleticism. True switch, similar approaches from both sides. Solid pop with some feel for the barrel. Catching has improved over last year, natural arm strength.

2021 C Zach Kress - Uncommitted, large frame, strong athletic body. One of the top defensive catchers still on the board in AZ. Good mobility with quick catch & release. Offensive has improved significantly.

  1. If it is a supernova draft, the Mets ought to lose a lot this week. We’ll forget about 2020 soon enough, but higher draft picks could be a game changer for the franchise.

  2. The draft will add a lot of future pieces to a team owned by someone that will be committed to win.

    Forget drafting by position.

Pick and sign the top name on your board and trade or FA sign to fill in position holes.

Ya know... like a the real teams do.

  3. With so many teams laying off scouts, now may be a good time to sign the best of the ones out of a job. I know the trend is less scouts - more analytics - but nothing beats seeing players in person.

  4. Cohen will be a buyer, not a seller.

I also think that there is a freeze right now on employees due to this pending sale.
