What’s next: The Mets and Rays will wrap up their three game series on
Wednesday at 7:10 p.m. at Citi Field. Michael
Wacha will get the start for the Mets, while Tyler Glasnow will start for
the Rays.
Metstradamus:
“Seth Lugo had a great bounce back outing for the Mets, going six and 1/3 while
only giving up one earned run (and one other run being a direct result of Todd
Frazier’s refusal to bend any more than he had to on a ground ball) while
striking out seven and walking only one.”
SNY.TV:
“Lugo exited the game after 6.1 innings and 95 pitches with runners on first
and second and just one out. Justin Wilson came in for Lugo, and threw a wild
pitch that allowed a run to score to make it a 3-2 game.”
Brian Joura Mets360: “Robinson Cano,
Pete Alonso and Guillermo Heredia each homered for the Mets. Cano and Alonso
each had two-hit games. Cano is now hitting .320 for the season. And Alonso is
up to .209 in his quest to stay above the Mendoza Line.”

Puma NY Post: “Alonso’s solo homer in the fourth against Snell gave the
Mets a 2-1 lead. Alonso, who was 2-for-34 before the blast, hit a rocket to
right-center, extending his team lead in homers to 13. The homer was Alonso’s
first since a stretch of seven games earlier this month in which he hit five.”

Sherman NY Post: Mets rivals favor Dominic Smith over Pete Alonso in
complicated debate. “I asked eight scouts, executives and coaches — all
from the NL East — if you could acquire one or the other, who would you want?
None saw it as strongly definitive, but Smith was favored five to three…
‘Alonso might have the higher
ceiling, but Smith has the higher floor.’”

Mets' missing ingredient may be Chili Davis. "In the dugout, Chili is
really valuable," Luis Rojas said, adding that his hitting coach has done
well communicating virtually...”Chili will have that conversation with the guys

This MLB-wide offensive stat could bolster Jacob
deGrom's chances of winning third-straight Cy Young. The race could come
down to deGrom vs. Trevor Bauer. “…deGrom (who has faced only one team this

faced only one team this season with a team OPS+ above 100).”

Brian Joura Mets360: On lumping Rick
Porcello and Michael Wacha in the same boat. “My opinion is that from a bottom-line

In his first major league start,
17 year-old first baseman Ed Kranepool gets his first hit, an eighth-inning
double at the Polo Grounds in the Mets' 2-1 walk-off victory over Chicago.
When the former James Monroe High School standout retires, he will be the
franchise leader in eight offensive categories, including collecting 1418

Exactly one year after their

the Mets give Gil Hodges a reason to breathe a bit easier when the team
clinches a tie for the NL East flag by beating the Cardinals, 3-2, on an 11th
inning walk-off single stroked by Bud Harrelson off Bob Gibson. Prior to the
Shea Stadium victory, Linton H. Bishop, Jr., the skipper's cardiologist, had
sent him a telegram that read, "Happy to see you're No. 1. Hope your
team does as well as your heart." |

Jose Reyes collects his 200th hit

Pete Alonso’s performance last night muddied my negative article at 9:30 on Pete. But I tweaked it and am rolling with it, as one game does not change the thrust thereof.
ReplyDeleteKranepool gets a hit at age 17...sky was the limit. He didn’t hit the sky, but had a nice career. I wonder how he would have done in 2020 with a weight training regimen.
Tom - Pete has struggled this year. Hopefully he can finish strong. Thought the NY post article was interesting as they said Pete had the higher Ceiling but DOM the lower floor. Being a line drive hitter, Dom is less prone to go into deep slumps while HR hitters tend to get there HRs in bunches. Lucas Duda would seem to hit ten in one week, then slump for a month, then hit another ten, etc. Kingman the same way.
ReplyDeleteThat's why I say build your team on speed and defense - and if you get a manager in your system that also believes in that philosophy - don't can him.
Pete is still hitting at a 40+ home run clip.
ReplyDeleteNot too shabby for a .200 hitter.
Kingman must be a big fan.
John, it doesn’t seem right to say that Smith is a line drive hitter devoid of power. In fact, a scout said that since the Mets solved the sleep apnea, Smith became the hitter he was supposed to be, pure swing and power. This debate bothers me, as I like them both. Alonso is compared to McGwire and I concur that he is a student of the game. Smith on the other hand is more blasé in his game, and that makes me uneasy. Then, there’s the JD Davis factor, as another first base candidate who’s a righty, but he can also play third. But while I believe Alonso has the talent to be a more rounded hitter like Smith, will he put in the work to change himself?
ReplyDeleteDid you guys notice Rosario last night? Wow! I hadn’t seen Rosario play so hard since he was a rookie. He had spent too much time trying to look cool like his buddy and the results were showing. Much more energy last night.
Thanks Gus. Did not notice that about Rosario.
ReplyDeleteI like both Dom and Pete as well. I think the DH is here to stay. The problem is that the Mets have too many DH players. They need to minimize the time Cano spends at 2B while still getting him into the lineup. Also don't want to see Dom or JD in LF or Nimmo in CF.
John from Albany
ReplyDeleteI am a believer in a lot of what is here now. I see talent, effort, youth, and phenomenal team chemistry unlike the Delgado years.
Here's my grand scheme and I would like your critique if you will.
1b Alonso/Smith 2b McNeil/Cano SS Rosario/Guillorme 3b Davis/Cano Lf Nimmo CF Marisnick RF Conforto C Nido and Ryan Jeffers via a trade with Minnesota possiblt involving A. Gimenez who would fetch Jeffers perhaps.
SP deGrom, New Tier One Lefty Starter, Peterson, Lugo, and either a MiLB trade for Jay Groome (Boston) or Szapucki.
BP Castro, Diaz and four more.
The Reasoning:
I think this team as a whole just needs a stud lefty starter and then minor roster tweaking. If the Mets do the rebranding thing (once again bring in too many new faces) it could be like old times when they sort of waste a whole season trying hard to put all the new pieces into the right place. It sets the timetable backwards in other words.
It's a homegrown young team here really overall, with a brand new manager, and a relatively new GM. Sandy Alderson gets the circle, he stables the ship and gets the MiLB next (2) MiLB waves in shape, a brilliant move for the win here.
