METS AGREE TO TERMS WITH EIGHT PLAYERS
FLUSHING, N.Y., January 15, 2021 – The New York Mets today announced that they have agreed to terms on one-year contracts with the following players: RHP Miguel Castro, OF Michael Conforto, RHP Edwin Díaz, RHP Robert Gsellman, INF Francisco Lindor, RHP Seth Lugo, OF Brandon Nimmo and INF/OF Dominic Smith.
What's up with JDD?
ReplyDeleteAccording to Spotrac, the Mets are $24.1MM under the Luxury Tax threshold. Further, they estimate Davis at $2.3MM, giving the Mets a total of about $21.8MM to play with. Don’t spend it all in one place! No Springer, no Bauer; just a reliever, a cheap starter, maybe an outfielder maybe not, and a little room to make a mid-season trade.
ReplyDeleteBill - I am guessing JDD feels strongly that he was perhaps unlucky over 60 game season - some guys who do great the first 60 games fall off, and vice versa.
ReplyDeleteThink of John Tudor 1985, probably the most extreme example in MLB history: 1-7 thru Memorial Day, 20-1 thereafter.
JDD had a very solid 2019, made very little $$ for it in 2020, and now is likely upset they want to penalize him for what he sees is bad luck. If so, I can't blame him. Remember, he still would have made in 2021 about 40% of what Steve Matz will, and he was absolutely terrible.
All that to say, he should weigh carefully whether getting on his employer's bad side is worth it. m Keep it polite and professional.
Texas Gus, it all depends on if Cohen decides to stay under the cap or not. If he says screw it, I'm going to $250 million, it's his checkbook
