Kinney has an unusual profile for a prep hitter—one that teams more typically let get to college. A projectable, 6-foot-2, 195-pound infielder, most scouts believe Kinney is a second baseman at the next level thanks to below-average arm strength. Some evaluators have wondered if he could handle third base, but his arm could prevent him from handling the position. It’s rare for high school second basemen to be selected in a signable range (just 14 have signed inside the top 10 rounds since 2010) but Kinney’s bat could be strong enough for him to join that select group. Kinney stays through the zone well from the left side of the plate and while he has below-average power presently, he has a chance to grow into average power as he fills out his frame. Kinney is the sort of player who teams are likely split heavily on, but those who are in like him potentially as high as a day one player. He is committed to South Carolina.

Cooper Kinney is a 2021 2B/C/3B with a 6-2 195 lb. frame from Chattanooga, TN who attends Baylor. Strong athletic build with room to get stronger. Left handed hitter, hits from a slightly open stance with a well timed leg lift trigger, easy and fluid swing with loose quick hands and present bat speed, has very good feel for the barrel and consistently squares up the ball, projects power, pull to mid field approach, chance to be an impact hitter. 7.17 runner, compact arm action, stays on top of his throws well and makes accurate throws.

9/25/19 - South Carolina commit. 6-foot-2, 195-pound left-handed hitting infielder and catcher, durable, athletic build, strength through frame with much more to come, one of the top bats at the PBR Cup. Showed an incredible amount of bat speed at the plate with quick, loose hands, could hear the draft of the bat as it whipped through the zone. Keeps it simple with a short hand load and stride. Explosive through the point of contact, really lets it fly. Barrel works uphill through the zone as he attempts to do damage with each and every swing. Put it all together Saturday as he smashed a home run 373 feet, 96 mph off the bat.
