Scouting Report - C - Joey Spence

Joey Spence

C 6-0 195 West Bend East HS (WI)

Joey Spence, C - Joey Spence was another guy a little under the radar coming in. The power hitting lefty catcher from Wisconsin showed a better mix of tools than what I had previously seen, with the hit tool playing better against good competition and the defensive ability being enough to think he may be able to stick there as he continues to improve- though the bat would play at first.

Making hard contact throughout the day, Spence’s bat is his carrying tool. With a smooth, repeatable swing and plenty of strength in his 5-foot-11, 195-pound mature frame, he squared up lasers to center and left center in two of his four at-bats. With top level bat-to-ball skills, the left-handed hitting Spence generated 96 mph exit velocity with a powerful core and strong forearms. His 7.09 sixty was loose with lower effort, something his compact body type may suggest otherwise. Behind the dish Spence displayed near average arm strength (78 mph) with fair carry and consistent pops in the 2.03-2.09 range. His footwork was short and direct, while his throwing motion compact. He will head to Notre Dame next fall and has all the tools and skills to make an immediate impact on the program.

Joey Spence is a 2021 C/3B with a 6-0 195 lb. frame from West Bend, WI who attends West Bend East. Medium build with very good present strength. Left handed hitter, has loose hands and an easy rhythmic swing with a hanging leg lift trigger to start, creates bat speed and can impact the ball, as some barrel whip out front, repeats his swing well, has a chance to develop as a hitter, especially for a catcher. Left handed hitter, has good lower half flexibility and sets up low, compact arm action, has some quickness to his actions and shows athleticism. Interesting combination of hitting tools and premium position defense.

  1. Spence seems like the type of guy who might want a year in college and try the 2022 draft instead
