Tom Brennan - REMEMBER, IT'S ONLY SPRING TRAINING

This article is NOT about Pete Crow-Armstrong, who has delighted me with his first-ever pro at bats this spring, but it is only spring training and he will not be coming to Queens to play CF in 2021.

Some look at spring training so far and see this:

"Errors to the left of me, errors to the right of me, errors all around me."

Yeah, but it is spring training.

And beyond that, it is EARLY in spring training.

Some things are true warning signs, some are not.

Let's take, for instance, two Mets players from 2020.

In spring training they combined to go 7 for 57 (.123), no HRs, 4 RBIs, 2 walks, 18 Ks.

Non, no, it's not Keon Broxton and Aaron Altherr.  Why does your mind always go there?  Stick with me here.

Those same two players in the subsequent 2020 regular season hit .319 in 234 at bats, with 27 doubles, 10 HRs, 51 RBIs, and 24 walks.

Yep, those same two guys who were worse than ridiculously awful at the plate in spring training FLAT OUT TORE IT UP in the regular season.

Their names?

Dominic Smith and Luis Guillorme.

So remember this the next time you find yourself over-reacting to foibles in games prior to March 9.

This has been a Public Service Announcement.

Now go wash your hands.

  1. The kids have been assigned to minor camp "alternate site".

How do I think they've acquitted themselves? Tomorrow at 8 AM.
