Funny that the lowly 1962 Mets could score 8 runs. The stinking 2021 Mets have not scored more than 6 in their last 16 games. NO MORE HITTER EXTENSIONS!
ReplyDeleteAfter that win the '62 Mets were 2-12...not good pitching and not good defense. 9-9 is ok in comparison.
ReplyDeleteThe hitting is just so disappointing. 1/9 of the season is over already. Hitting is almost non-existent. Does everybody need a Steve Matz change of scenery to perform?
ReplyDeletePete had a very bad night- it happens. Lindor not on track yet - this has happened time and time again when players come to a new setting and sign a big contract.
ReplyDeleteMets need to build a team around speed and defense (I bet if they did that in 2019 in Brooklyn they would have won a championship - wait, they did - what happened to that Manager? They fired him.)
Guillorme need to play everyday and hit second. If Nimmo can't play, put him on the IL, bring up Fargas 0 have hime lead off. I know, Fargas Ks a lot - but at least he has speed. WHen he gets on - Luis can move him over and Lindor can get him in.
John, please, you are getting crazy. You want to DL Nimmo and bring up Fargas?
ReplyDeleteJimmy
I wonder if Chili Davis is going to keep his job.
ReplyDeleteThe players ran him out of Chicago.
The team looks so bad right now.
Yes, patience: It's reasonable to look at the erratic schedule, the cold weather, and say that we need to give this two more weeks. And I agree with that assessment.
BUT . . .
This group looks so pull-happy. Conforto used to be a more complete hitter, going the other way with authority. McNeil, too, used to use the whole field. Not anymore. Dom looks sluggish & sleepy. Pete is Pete. And Lindor just looks so out of sync. I read a stat that said that McCann is one of 11 players who has not barreled up a ball all season.
None of these guys are driving anything to the opposite field. The approach looks bad to me, and that's worrisome in that it suggests a deeper problem.
Oddly, where's the power?
Oh well. I guess we wait and hope.
Dom's defense is so bad, so horrendous, that he really needs to start hitting, and soon. Not loving the gut.
Tonight I rest Nimmo again -- with day off tomorrow, he should be ready to go on Friday -- and I play Almora in CF. Otherwise, same guys.
Jimmy
Sidenote:
ReplyDeleteI laughed at the Spring Training talk about how the Mets are going to be "aggressive" on the basepaths this year! It's the same old talk every year.
The thing is, it's a roster problem, not an attitude issue. When you ask SLOW guys to be more aggressive RUNNING, you get dude thrown out on the basepaths. McCann got thrown out by 10 feet at 2B; Pillar tried to steal against a catcher with a 37% success rate. In the same inning! Talk about taking a pitcher off the hook.
If you want better baserunning, get faster guys. If not, remember that OUTS mean everything. Don't give them away. If you are a slow team, be smart.
Jimmy
Fargas over a healthy Nimmo? No. Fargas over a hurt and unable to play Nimmo? Yes. And as you say - the Mets need speed. Fargas brings that though he is probably a 4 A outfielder. Don't think Lee is ready yet. Fargas was MVP in Puerto Rico this Winter - Lee hit under. 200 there.
ReplyDeleteJohn,
ReplyDeleteI didn't say they needed speed. I said that if they WANT better baserunning, that's a speed/talent/roster issue, not a coaching strategy.
Billy Hamilton is fast and available and he sucks.
To my mind, you seem to be one of those guys who loves the minor league players. But that's not what the New York Mets are doing in 2021.
Hopefully Nimmo will be healthy. That's the reports. They had him PH last night, so that suggests he's on track for a quick return. Right?
If Nimmo is unexpectently out for a while, they will turn to Pillar first, then Almora. Your guy Fargas might come, maybe, after that. But he's not even a highly-touted prospect.
I'm not seeing the fascination.
I believe if everything went wrong, they'd trade for a guy before they even considered Fargas in a year they hope to go deep in the playoffs. He needs to put in the time and put up the numbers and knock down the door.
Jimmy
It would come down to the hot minor leaguer, but Fargas or....Mallex Smith? He seems to be in decline (maybe, maybe not) but is a .255 MLB hitter who steals 8 bases per every 100 plate appearances. And he only turns 28 next week. Fargas would have to show he is demonstrably better than the guy who's already been there. Of course, Smith would have to prove he is not the next Billy Hamilton.
