New York Mets released Warren Spahn on July 22, 1965.

New York Mets purchased Dallas Green from the Philadelphia Phillies on July 22, 1966.

New York Mets traded Ken Boyer and Sandy Alomar to the Chicago White Sox for J. C. Martin and Billy Southworth on July 22, 1967.

New York Mets traded Doug Sisk to the Atlanta Braves for Tony Valle on July 22, 1990.

New York Mets claimed Mike Baxter on waivers from the San Diego Padres on July 22, 2011.

1962
During a twin bill with the Reds at Crosley Field, the Mets manage to have four runners thrown out trying to score at home plate. The new National League expansion team from New York loses both games, 11-4 and 4-3, en route to a record-setting 120 defeats this season.
1966
The Mets left fielder learns he is a new dad when the Dodger Stadium scoreboard relays the message, "Congratulations, Ron Swoboda. Your new son is born tomorrow morning". Cecilia Swoboda gave birth to Chipper, the couple's first child, at 12:02 am eastern standard time, making it the next day on the West Coast.

1986
Due to a series of maneuvers by Mets' manager Davey Johnson and the late-game ejections of Darryl Strawberry, Ray Knight, and Kevin Mitchell (the latter two as a result of a bench-clearing brawl precipitated by Knight when he decks pinch-runner Eric Davis at third base), the team runs out of position players. The shortage of regulars leads to some interesting juggling by the New York skipper when catcher Gary Carter plays third base and a pair of relievers shift between the mound and a corner outfield position, with righty Roger McDowell playing left field when Jesse Orosco pitches to lefties and the southpaw hurler moving to right field when McDowell comes in from the outfield to face right-handed batters, with Mookie Wilson moving from corner to corner as needed.

2005
Yhency Brazoban records his 18th save when he works a perfect ninth inning as the Dodgers beat the Mets, 6-5. The Los Angeles freshman, who is filling in for injured closer Eric Gagne, breaks Steve Howe's club rookie record for saves established in 1980.

1975 - Jerry Koosman steals second base and pitches a complete game in a 3 - 1 New York Mets victory over the Cincinnati Reds.

1986The Mets win a crazy five-hour marathon with the Reds in 14 innings, 6 - 3. Setting the tone, Darryl Strawberry is ejected after arguing a called third strike in the 5th. In the 9th, Howard Johnson inadvertently kicks the ball after Reds C Bo Diaz drops a third strike. Johnson runs out of the baseline and is hit in the back with the throw from pitcher Ron Robinson. Reds coach Billy DeMars is ejected for arguing the safe call. The Mets, down 3 - 1 with two out, tie the game when Dave Parker drops a routine fly ball. In the 10th, Davey Johnson sends in pitcher Rick Aguilera to hit for pitcher Doug Sisk. Aguilera walks, but is stranded. In the Reds' 10th, pinch-runner Eric Davis steals second and third base, bumping into Ray Knight. Knight decks Davis and both benches empty. Knight, Davis, Kevin Mitchell and Mario Soto are ejected. Gary Carter moves to 3B, Roger McDowell comes in to pitch, and Jesse Orosco moves from the mound to RF. With two out and a runner on second base in the 11th, Orosco returns to pitch, McDowell moves to LF, and Mookie Wilson shifts to right. Reds player-manager Pete Rose protests when Orosco is permitted eight warm-up pitches. Orosco whiffs Max Venable to end the inning. In the 12th, the Mets are forced to lead off the inning with Orosco and McDowell, and go down in order. McDowell returns to pitch in the 13th and gets Tony Perez to fly to Orosco in right. Howard Johnson belts a three-run homer in the 14th and McDowell retires the side in order to end the game.

1994Mets P Dwight Gooden is admitted to the Betty Ford Center in California for treatment of a substance abuse problem.

2001The Phillies pull out a 3 - 2 win over the Mets on Bobby Abreu's 8th-inning home run off John Franco. It is the first home run hit by a lefty off Franco since September 221993.

2008The Mets blow a 5 - 2 lead entering the 9th as four relievers fail to protect Johan Santana's fine starting effort. The Phillies rally for a 8 - 6 win and overtake the Mets for first in the NL East Division. So Taguchi and Jimmy Rollins hit two-run doubles. The Mets are without closer Billy Wagner, undergoing testing for shoulder pain.

  1. Wilmer Flores is the straw that stirs the Giants drink.

    Stroman? Whoa, man, so good.

Would any of yesterday's 3 HRs been HRs in Citifield? Maybe not.

Good to see Almora hitting in AAA. Keep it up, and work your way back.

  2. Jon Miller said “what a moment for Wilmer Flores”? Does he not know who Wilmer Flores is?

Getting those draftees signed up. Don’t know why they rushed to sign Rocker? They better have enough money for everyone and not lose a first round pick…

  3. Gus - great point on the Miller call. Wish Mets had kept him

  4. John, Wilmer fell into the same whirlpool that Daniel Murphy got caught up in, in that a limited player is not appreciated foe his strengths but only looked at for his weaknesses. Flores will never have a high average because he is super slow and he makes alot of contact. That contact is also what makes him a good RBI guy because he brings guys in from 3rd where strikeouts from other guys leave them there. Now, my problem with Wilmer is he never tried to improve his defense at 3rd, specifically the accuracy of his throws. However, both the D’Backs and the Giants have found success using Flores regularly whether at first, second, or third base.

I could see the same pattern happening to JD Davis, where the emphasis on his short comings run him out of town ans he could be a beast somewhere else, maybe Washington?

  5. Gus, I could see that happening with JDD - under-appreciated bat

  6. Great points Gus -

Funny JD Davis was essentially Wilmer's low cost replacement.

Biggest thing about Wilmer was they insisted at keeping him at SS all through the minors instead of giving him a position he could actually play.

Mets, don't make the same mistake with Mauricio - granted he is better than Flores at SS - but he has 11 errors this year - there are better positions for him.
