Tom Brennan - BRING THE HAMMER DOWN

Bring that hammer DOWN!

In quite a few seasons, the Mets at some point went into free fall, folded up their circus tent, and went home unrewarded…and not deserving rewards.  Why would they…they just got HAMMERED.

In a few seasons, though, they themselves have brought the hammer down hard and demolished the opposition.

In 1969, the Mets won an astounding 41 of their last 50 games, and went from 9th place in 1968 to 1st in 1969.  The Cubs were run over by a freight train that even Denzel Washington couldn’t slow down.

In 1986, a 2-3 start was followed by an 18-1 scorched earth record over their next 19.  That hammer blow stunned the NL, and reverberated all over the baseball world. Hammering continued unabated, as they proceeded to go 88-50 over their final 138 games.

In 2015, the Mets roared out to a 15-5 record, but then a floundering Mets team sputtered to 34-43 over their next 77 games.  A few trades ignited the team, though, starting in late July, and the team rocked to a 41-24 season finish and eventual trip to the World Series. The Nationals? They got hammered.

The 2021 squad offensively has had no Met having a stellar year, several others having a sub par season to date, and others spending more time on the IL than on the bench, and 5 starting pitchers either not pitching at all yet or seriously injured. Three back up players also totaled a simply unimaginable 5 for 86 with one itty bitty RBI.

Yet…they are in first place by a solid margin. Some guys have returned and are playing again, and a few other key players should return in July and August.  And Megill joined the party.

Given he recent health improvements, it is time to…

DROP THE HAMMER!

BRING THAT HAMMER DOWN!

Run so far away from the field that Mets players’ pictures start showing up on missing persons milk cartons.

44-37 at the half way point? How about a 50-31 finish?  94-68 overall.

Bring the Hammer DOWN!

35 years since the last Mets World Series championship.

Time for a trip to Home Depot… shop in the sledgehammer aisle.

  1. Mack, San Diego helped with that 9-8 win over Nats, where it was 8-0 and the relief pitcher hit a grand slam off Scherzer. Now…capitalize on all the good luck so far.

  3. Also Tom a great idea about Home Depot which I love also because they have designated Military parking spots (Lowes too) so I'll buy a BIG sledgehammer and have Peter Gabriel's song on the radio. LGM!
