The Mets fought back, but ultimately the night ends in frustration again. They lose 5-4 to the Marlins and have now dropped five of their last six.

With the Phillies win in DC, the Mets division lead has shrunk to 1.5 games. That's the smallest their lead has been since May 26.
The first-place Mets are six games under .500 over their last 46 games. Their .435 winning percentage over that seven-week stretch ranks 22nd in the Majors.

This stat blows my mind: The last time a Mets starting pitcher recorded a win was July 23. Mets starters have four wins TOTAL in their last 47 games.

- Cleon Jones (1942)
- Kevin Collins (1946)
- Steve Bieser (1967)
1963 | At County Stadium, Roger Craig suffers his 20th loss of the season when the Mets lose to Milwaukee, 2-1. The defeat is the right-hander's 18th consecutive setback, tying Cliff Curtis' National League mark set in 1910 with the Braves, and one loss shy of A's Jack Nabors' 1916 major league record. |
1982 | After driving in the winning run in the Mets' 7-4 victory over the Cubs, Joel Youngblood, who is traded to the Expos during the game, flies to Philadelphia and singles for Montreal to become the first player to have a hit for two different teams on the same day in different cities. The 30 year-old All-Star collects his two historic hits off two future Hall of Famers, a single off Ferguson Jenkins in Chicago, and gets his other knock off Steve Carlton in the City of Brotherly Love. |
1985 | On the same day Tom Seaver records his 300th victory, Mets' phenom Doc Gooden wins his 11th consecutive game, breaking Tom Terrific’s franchise mark established in 1969. The 20-year-old right-hander, going the distance, beats the Cubs at Wrigley Field, 4-1, to improve his record to 17-3 this season. |
1985 | In a 4-1 complete-game victory at Yankee Stadium, White Sox right-hander Tom Seaver becomes the 17th player in major league history to record his 300th victory, limiting the Bronx Bombers to six hits, all singles. Owner George Steinbrenner becomes irate when the fans start chanting 'Let's Go Mets,' as an homage to the beloved right-hander, who spent the 12 years with his team's crosstown rivals. |
2006 | In the Phillies' 5-3 victory over the Mets, Chase Utley's hitting streak ends at 35 consecutive games. Philadelphia's second baseman, who goes 0-for-5, has the fourth-longest stretch in National League history. |
2012 | Mike Baxter sets a team record and ties a National League mark when he walks five times in a nine-inning game in the Mets' 6-4 victory over San Diego at Petco Park. Only five of the 25 pitches thrown to the New York right fielder were strikes, with thirteen of the final 14 being out of the strike zone. |
2016 | Bartolo Colon becomes the first pitcher in the history of the Subway Series to record a victory as a member of both New York clubs when the visiting Mets beats the Bronx Bombers, 4-1. In 2011, Big Bart, in his only season with the Yankees, pitched six strong innings of shutout ball to earn a 5-2 victory over the Big Apple rivals at Citi Field. |

You want a stat that tells you the Mets are about to sink? 4 starter wins in the last 47 starter starts? Crazy.
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile, the Mets face Cy Young nightly, so it is quite understandable the offense would be offending so many of us.
When the Mets trailed 4-3 in the 3rd, didn't you feel the game was still over?
Dom Smith did have two sac flies. This team has been short on hitting big flies of the over the wall variety all season.
Taijuan. you can't allow 4 runs. That's just insurmountable.
Lugo, you gave up a run? You might as well put Mt Everest in front of the Mets hitters, to come back with 2 runs.
Cortes is hot again . I saw call him up. Shake and Rake - Crispy Hitting Without Trying.
Carlos in his last 5 contests is 9 for 22 with 9 RBIs. If you've forgotten what the term RBI means while watching Mets games, you can google a nice definition.
LGFM - LET'S GO FEEBLE METS
Michael Conforto: so nice to see he followed that pinch hit double the other night with a break out game last night - at least for him: he had a walk to go with 0 for 3. Mendoza points out he and Conforto are neighbors: .197 on August 3. I think right about now is the time for an 8 year, $200 million extension, no, make it $250 MM, to help motivate him, since nothing else has worked for him in April May, June, July, and now the start of August. Just be patient, OK, fellas? We still have the rest of the season to blow - err, I mean bounce back in.
ReplyDeleteHope may spring eternal - but the boat the spring is in has sprung a lot of leaks.
Even when they were winning - it was with a lot of late inning rallies. Their starting pitching and the bullpen were great to start but the injuries to the starting staff finally has caught up with them and Walker and Stroman have not been able to sustain their early successes. Stroman didn't pitch last year, Walker hasn't had more than 20 starts since 2017 - so it makes sense.
ReplyDeleteThe offense being this bad? Now that was something I would not have predicted. Last night Dave Rubin texted "I think they fired Chili Davis too soon"
