The best news in that regard for Nevada is that it has junior righthander Kade Morris back in the fold to lead that initiative. Morris led the team in ERA last season with a 4.32 mark in 66.2 innings, and after beginning the season as a multi-inning reliever was moved into the rotation late and made four starts.

That helped earn him a spot on the training camp roster for USA Baseball’s Collegiate National Team, where he trained and competed alongside the very best college baseball has to offer. At that time, the expectation was that Morris was transferring to TCU, but late in the summer, he changed course and returned to Reno.

His stuff is undeniable, as he worked with a fastball that sat 94-96 mph during his time with the CNT over the summer alongside a sweeping slider in the high 70s and low 80s and a high-80s changeup. For as good as his stuff is, however, Morris has not collected strikeouts by the bunch at Nevada. Last season, for example, he had 53 in 66.2 innings.

To change that, McKinley and his staff this fall set about doing the delicate dance of helping Morris to maximize his stuff while also being careful to not tinker so much as to damage his standing as a premium draft prospect this coming summer.

42. Kade Morris, RHP, Nevada – Morris entered the transfer portal and actually committed to TCU this summer, but ultimately was forced to reverse course and head back to Nevada. He absolutely has a starter’s look as he uses both a two and four seam fastball that can get up to 97, a change that is a weapon against lefties despite still being rather raw, and a quality slider.

He has even shown an occasional curve at times. His delivery has some effort and the arm is very whippy in a bit of an inconsistent 3/4 arm slot, so there is definitely some reliever risk with Morris.

Kade Morris

Nevada

Morris is really built like a big league pitcher. He's got the long, lean frame with the super-quick arm and steady delivery teams like to see. He's been used in a number of roles at Nevada, but most expect him to get a shot to start as he works his way into pro ball. Morris can rush it up to 96 with a four-seam and two-seam fastball, though he's ordinarily in the 92-93 range.

His swing-and-miss weapon is a sweeping slider with significant break. He works in a curveball and a fringier changeup, but he's shown feel for each pitch at one point or another, all of which flash at least usable moving forward. Morris has the athletic, prototype delivery teams love, but he just hasn't missed as many bats as you'd expect in his collegiate career with the stuff he possesses.
