Even in a 2022 season that statistically could have been viewed as disappointing (.273/.405/.558), Ole Miss shortstop Jacob Gonzalez proved why he is one of the best 2023 MLB Draft prospects. Turning 21 in May, the Rebels’ 6-foot-2 infielder is one of the best hitters available with a fantastic eye at the plate and a quick swing. He might need to shift to third base long-term, but the Detroit Tigers would be elated to have him in their lineup within a few years.

Gonzalez was a bat out of hell during his 2021 freshman campaign at Ole Miss. He started hot in 2022, but slumped down the stretch. When the Rebels entered the postseason, he lit back up. He has a mature approach to the plate, taking more walks than K’s, which is good to see for someone his age. He’s got soft hands and quick feet at shortstop, too, so I expect him to hang there.

It starts with Jacob Gonzalez, the premier shortstop in college baseball, an on-base machine with 30 career home runs in two seasons and elite defensive ability. Gonzalez missed time this fall after spraining his MCL on a collision at second base, allowing some other players to get reps at short and giving the Rebels some insurance at the position, but he’ll be 100 percent well before opening day and will serve as the centerpiece of the Ole Miss offense and defense.

2. Jacob Gonzalez, SS, Ole Miss – Bat control and zone awareness might be Gonzalez’ best tools as he rarely chases the ball out of the zone. While he has an open stance, his hips and torso stay closed allowing for plenty of bat speed through the zone helping the ball really jump off his bat. He can handle the best fastball, and easily adjust to a big curve, while keeping a bat plane that is best suited for line drives to the gaps. In the field he will be able to stick at short thanks to his smooth and easy action in the field.

Ole Miss shortstop Jacob Gonzalez is atop FanGraphs’ top draft prospects rankings for 2023 (not to be confused with minor league first baseman Jacob Gonzalez). Gonzalez has been a stud for the 2022 College World Series university. Through 610 plate appearances, Gonzalez is slashing .316/.424/.560.
Gonzalez hits for good power, having hit 30 round-trippers throughout college. However, what makes him so intriguing is his elite plate coverage and discipline. Gonzalez has just 66 K’s and has drawn 88 walks. That’s a 10.8% strikeout rate and 14.4% walk rate.
Gonzalez has also displayed a good glove up the middle. FanGraphs projects him to be a 60-grade defender. He also has a 55-grade arm, so he’ll easily have the arm strength to make the deep throws. The only downside is he lacks range. He’s a mediocre runner, so a move to the hot corner or a corner outfield position may be in his future. Regardless, Gonzalez is currently the best pure hitter among notable potential 2023 draft selections.

Gonzalez's numbers dipped as a sophomore, though he still batted .273/.405/.558 with 18 homers and more walks than strikeouts, and he accounted for all three of Mississippi's runs in the CWS clincher to give the Rebels their first national championship. He has at least average big league power, controls the strike zone and has the athleticism and arm strength to remain at shortstop.

Gonzalez has made a tremendous impact offensively in his first two years at Ole Miss. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound left-handed hitter is a well-rounded offensive player. He has notable bat-to-ball skills and hits for average and power to all fields. He also has tremendous plate discipline, as he has more walks (88) than strikeouts (66) at Ole Miss.
Defensively, Gonzalez is athletic and possesses above-average arm strength. He has good instincts and will remain at shortstop long term.
