Tom Brennan - Can the Mets Just Divorce the Braves Already?

Divorce the Braves, Win World Series Trophies

But first…

NEWS FLASH: METS GET SWEPT BY LOWLY TIGERS, MAX CLOBBERED.

Saw 2 Max pitches…just two…

88 and 91. That ain’t Max. That’s Matt Harvey.

OK, that’s all for that topic, except to say:

“Auntie Em, it’s not 2022 anymore.”

Once Edwin sustained his season-ending injury, I immediately thought: “we’re screwed.”

We surely seem to be. 16-15 now….78-84 later?

NOW ON TO MY ARTICLE:

There has been a drastic change in the MLB schedule this year.

It used to be you played teams in your division 19 times each.

Now it is 13 times each.

Those extra games get spread around quite a bit.

Simply to say, significant realignments can occur.

Heck, the Mets and Astros joined the NL in 1962.

Since then, the Astros relocated to the AL.

Given the above, change is possible.

May I suggest one more change?

I want the Mets and Braves to get a divorce, on the grounds of prolonged and severe abuse and cruelty.

You see, in the past 32 seasons, Atlanta has won the NL East 20 times and finished 2nd five times.   The Mets have finished first JUST TWICE and 2nd nine times. Just to be clear, two 1st place finishes in 32 seasons.

That is sheer dominance.  And we're the ones being dominated.

The Whiskey Foxtrot Bravos also lead the division so far this year.

I am not conceding 2023, but I am not one who ignores history, either.

I for one am "vomitously" sick of losing.

Let's pause here for a second...AREN'T YOU, TOO?

I want to win division titles and some World Series.

All fingers and toes counted nearly twice, it's been 37 years since the last Mets WS win.

That is absurd, given the less-than-eternal life spans of human beings.

So...I know, I know, Pittsburgh is off to a good start this season.

But that I think is a brief aberration; they have long been patsies.

The Bucs have had many, many bad seasons, the alter ego of Atlanta.

So I want to file for a divorce. Adios, Atlanta, baby.

Move Atlanta to the NL Central, and Pittsburgh (or Cincy) to the NL East.

Heck, Pittsburgh is in the same state as Philly, and Pittsburgh is hundreds of miles closer to Queens than is Atlanta.

All 3 are in the same time zone, too.

I'd not mind an even more radical move.

As in - move the Mets to the sucky AL Central.

How?

Just call each Division I, II, and III.

Remove the silly geography descriptors from the Division names.

Draw a vertical line - Pittsburgh is further east than Atlanta.

If the Mets even move to AL Division II, I'm cool with that.

Or if the Braves move to NL II and Pittsburgh to NL I, I be cool with dat.

You see, unlike Hotlanta, the Mets in the last 32 seasons have been a darned disappointment.

But had Pittsburgh been in the Mets' division rather than Atlanta, maybe the Mets would have finished first 10 or more times instead of 2.

The status quo sucks - wake up, speak up, and let's get it changed.

If someone brings up rivalries, tell them where to stick their rivalries.

Heck, players move from team to team at bewildering speeds these days, anyway - what's with the adherence to geography?

I want World Series wins.

Anything else is just wallpaper. Or toilet paper.

  3. Our starting staff sucks and not sure there is an answer this year. Getting 5 innings from them has been a struggle and the old "it's early" ain't cutting it or as Yogi once said it's getting late early.

  4. Divorce Atlanta. Just realize that many investments in players over the years (especially pertinent being 2023) is with Atlanta in mind. It’s gotten us into a fine mess, Ollie.

  5. Mets pick up Dominic Leone - maybe he can help in the pen. Decent career. Just 31.

  7. My point is not about 2023. We have missed so many titles due to the Braves. I’d really give thought in the Cohen camp about pushing for change.
