Next up is probably going to be an all-or-nothing Mets prospect.
Calvin Zeigler is a 20-year 6-0/205 RHSP, drafted by the Mets in the 2nd round of the 2021 draft, directly out of top prospect team TNXL Academy.
His pro career has so far been a series of missteps.
He was never used in 2021 after the draft and went on the shelf until 2022.
He started 16 games for St. Lucie with very little success (0-6, 4.44). The only highlight was 70-K in 46.2-IP (but 35 walks came along with that).
He was then shut down for the remainder of the season with a torn quad.
2023 brought one friggin start, with three strikeouts in one friggin inning, followed with being shut down for the remainder of this friggin season with bone friggin spurs on his elbow.
And now the once high school phenom with the incredible 93-95 fastball with sink is a three year vet with basically no accomplishments to speak of.
Talent wise, it was all here for this guy. Sure, there was wildness, but you can't teach two + pitches like the big spin fastball and slider Zeigler has.
Not much else to say here. Bringing up his phenomenal high school stats mean nothing at this point.
I've been trying to find someone at camp to tell me, one, is Z healthy, and, two, if so, what team will he suit up with this season, but nobody will discuss this guy. I don't know. Maybe Musk put him on the Space-X this past weekend.
My guess he will return to St. Lucie and be slow placed along side fellow walking wounded ex-phenom, Matt Allan.
My prediction is he will move into the pitching lab (if he hasn't already), and then come out a back-end reliever, if not a pure closer.
News at 11....
Calvin needs to ramp up the innings this year.
ReplyDeleteIt certainly seems like a very biZZZarre situation. Have you spoken directly with someone at the camp to ask about him? If so, are they just brushing you off with a "no comment" or something similar?
ReplyDeleteAt this rate, he'll be a FA before he throws another pitch. Speaking of throwing a pitch, has Allen thrown one since he was drafted? Have you asked about him?

ReplyDeleteI know someone that knows someone...
supposidly he is 100%
👍
DeleteGood news
ReplyDeleteHas he been throwing at the MnL camp?
ReplyDeleteHope he becomes Z best prospect this season.
ReplyDeleteLooked Good in the Prospect Game today.
ReplyDeleteMatt Allan looked like he was working hard with the Rehab players when I was down for opening day of spring training. I wouldn't give up all hope in that area, though he has to get on the field before he's just a dream.
